Beyerdynamic brings pro audio expertise to wireless gaming headphones with newly launched MMX 200
The high-end gaming headphone market is unmistakably seeing a boom right now, and Sony Playstation division's acquisition of Audeze only confirms the trend. With more premium brands entering this segment, it’s no surprise that Beyerdynamic, known for its excellent professional monitoring headphones, is strengthening its place in it with the recent launch of its first wireless gaming headphones, the MMX 200 wireless.
Audio quality-wise, the MMX 200 houses 40 mm drivers in a closed-back design, but lacks the spatial audio capability of the more premium MMX 300. There’s also no ANC, but the Augmented Mode blends ambient sounds with the audio content for better awareness. In terms of connectivity, a USB-C Bluetooth dongle enables the low-latency mode for gaming, although regular Bluetooth 5.3 and hybrid modes are also available, as well as a USB-C wired audio option.
The detachable, flexible ‘META VOICE’ boom mic has a 9.9 mm capsule for extra clarity and also suppresses ambient noises. Calls can still be made with the headphone’s in-built microphones when the boom mic is detached. The onboard controls include a control wheel to adjust volume, transparency to ambient sounds and the mute function. The META LINK button toggles between Low-Latency and regular Bluetooth modes.
Beyerdynamic’s circular over-ear designs like the DT770 and DT990 already have a reputation for long-term comfort, and the MMX 200 features similar memory foam-filled faux leather earcups and headband, with an adjustable aluminium bracket for an optimal fit.
There is tough competition in this price range from the likes of Sony INZONE H9, Logitech G PRO X2 and the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro, and the MMX 200 will have to compensate for its relatively modest feature list with better audio quality.
The Beyerdynamic MMX 200 wireless is now available in black or light grey for US$249 on Amazon
