Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced through a press release that the company has acquired headphone maker Audeze. Audeze, a privately-held company based in California, specializes in developing headphones for professionals, audio enthusiasts, and gamers. According to SIE, the acquisition is meant to “strengthen SIE’s efforts to continue innovating when it comes to the audio experience of PlayStation games”.
The press release also mentions that “Audeze will continue to operate independently and develop multi-platform products”.
Sony's acquisition of Audeze is a sign of it’s renewed focus on audio devices like headphones and earphones for the PS ecosystem. The company’s Senior Vice President of Platform Experience, Hideaki Nishino, explains that SIE is “excited to bring Audeze’s expertise into the PlayStation ecosystem, building on the great strides we’ve made with PlayStation 5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech and the Pulse 3D wireless headset”.
Interestingly, Sony announced the new Pulse Elite headset and pricing for the Pulse Explore wireless earbuds a few days ago. Both audio devices use “custom-designed planar magnetic drivers” according to Hideaki Nishino. Since Audeze manufactures custom planar magnetic drivers for headphones in-house, Sony could have already been partnering with Audeze before the deal as noted by The Verge.
All in all, it looks like PS5 users might not only have a PS5 Pro to look forward to but also some enthusiast-level audio gear courtesy of the Audeze acquisition.
