Meta Quest 3: New standalone VR headset debuts with 40% thinner design, pancake lenses and 2x gaming performance
Meta has provided an early look at the Quest 3, a few days after Mark Gurman shared details about the VR headset. As Meta discusses in the short video below, the Quest 3 is 40% thinner than the Quest 2 and will ship with new Touch Plus controllers that borrow the haptics motors from those that ship with the Quest Pro. Supposedly, improved tracking technology has allowed Meta to ditch tracking rings, thereby improving ergonomics.
Moreover, Meta claims that the Quest 3 packs double the GPU performance of the Quest 2 and will be the 'most powerful Meta Quest' headset to date. This improved performance will be put to use powering higher resolution displays, which will work in tandem with pancake lenses to deliver 25% improved centre sharpness and 50% at the edges of images. Furthermore, Meta has upgraded the camera hardware to provide full-colour passthrough and 10x more passthrough fidelity than the Quest 2.
Surprisingly, the Quest 3 is nowhere near release. Instead, Meta will provide more details at Meta Connect on September 27. In the meantime, Meta has confirmed that the Quest 3 will start at US$499 with 128 GB of storage; a larger storage option will also be available.
Meta has not outlined why it chose to unveil the Quest 3 today, although Apple is expected to present its first VR headset next week at WWDC 2023. While the pair will not be direct competitors, Apple's effort is rumoured to cost US$3,000, it seems that Meta is getting out ahead of what could soon be its main VR rival.
