Apple Reality headset tipped to feature 'see-through' effect and digital crown
Apple's supposedly upcoming "Reality", or, possibly, "Reality Pro", has been billed as the greatest risk the Cupertino giant has taken for years, if not decades. However, its top executives would, of course, prefer it were not also its greatest failure of all that time - particularly as it is now billed as a final, high-profile swansong for Dan Riccio before that executive's imminent retirement as the OEM's senior vice-president of engineering.
To this end, Apple insiders have now allegedly indicated that Riccio has deployed "utter genius" Mike Rockwell to oversee the Reality headset project. The device has also reportedly received design input from Jony Ive prior to his dissociation from the company: the one-time lynchpin designer has apparently insisted that the product integrate a Watch-esque Digital Crown for AR/VR mode-switching, as well as an "external display" that allows the user to show their eyes through the device's frontal 'visor' at will.
The headset's rumored xrOS software, overseen by 'original iOS developer' Kim Vorrath and Jim Norris, recruited from NASA/JPL to perfect the all-new product category, is now tipped to be what propels it into the mainstream - all with never a mote of "metaverse" hype in sight.
Nevertheless, the inaugural Reality variant is still thought to retail at ~US$3,000, which is where Apple marketing heavyweight Frank Casanova might weigh in. These individuals are part of the 'dream team' now touted by Bloomberg correspondent Mark Gurman to give the Apple Reality to move beyond rivals such as the Meta Quest Pro to achieve its possible goal of becoming as essential as the iPhone is now to the lives of many consumers in the near future.
