Tim Cook said to be planning one more major new product as Apple CEO before retiring
Tim Cook recently marked ten years at the helm of Apple and while people have been reflecting on his incredible success in the role, speculation has also arisen regarding his future. Cook is now 61 and he has 1 million Apple shares that are due to mature in 2025, part of a deal designed to keep him on until then. However, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the word inside Apple is that Cook may step down before then.
Apparently, Cook believes that being the head of a Silicon Valley tech company is best left for those that are younger, but he would like to bow out after ushering in Apple’s next breakthrough product. The only new product category to emerge under Cook’s tenure thus far has been the Apple Watch. It took a little while to catch on, but now for many iPhone users, the Apple Watch is an indispensable companion.
The two major products that Apple is known to be working on are mixed reality headset and the Apple car. The former is the closest to being launched with rumors tipping a 2022 unveiling. Cook has often spoken of AR as being a game changer and it is this that seems to be the product that Cook is favoring if he is to leave Apple before 2025. A version of the headset that could be worn like regular glasses is also being developed, but that is not likely to see the light of day until at least 2025.
While Cook's predecessor Steve Jobs will always be remembered as a visionary, Cook has overseen incredible year-over-year growth for the company that will rank him as one of the greatest CEOs of all time.
