PolarisAR has received FDA 510(k) clearance this month for its STELLAR Knee surgical guidance software. Paired with a mixed reality headset, surgeons are given unprecedented insight into the real-time position of hard and soft tissues through augmented reality.
Knee surgeries are often necessary for athletes and aging seniors, but the only technology previously available were surgical robots such as the million-dollar Mako. Dr. John Cooper, Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, Columbia University Irving Medical Center notes how current robotic technology "require a large footprint in my OR and a significant financial commitment from my institution." By reducing the technology needed for accurate surgery to just a mixed reality headset, PolarisAR is now able to market its technology as a much more affordable alternative.
But even with current robotic technology, Dr. Peter R. Kurzweil says "our surgical site has a lot of soft tissue that doesn't enable you to see the bone." By sensing the body's position and calculating the actual position of bones and soft tissue in real-time, Kurzweil explains that STELLAR Knee allows surgeons to be "like Superman (with x-ray vision) and see bone through the soft tissue" on the mixed reality headsets.
It remains to be seen how well PolarisAR's mixed reality technology will perform, but CEO Paul Mikus certainly believes in the future of improved care with lower costs.
