Apple reportedly working on a 20.3-inch foldable MacBook slated to enter mass production in 2027
Recently, speculation surfaced from a paywalled DigiTimes report suggesting that Apple has been exploring several foldable device projects. Among these is a large device that appears to be a hybrid of a Mac and iPad, running some version of iPadOS according to the claims. This project has apparently been in development within Apple for the past five years, according to the report.
This rumor gains more credibility from another recent leak by well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo via Twitter. Kuo argues that this is true as he identifies it as a huge 20.3-inch foldable MacBook, which will probably enter mass production in 2027. While this news confirms previous conjectures and rumors, Kuo's stamp of approval enhances the authenticity, which was also previously supported by renowned analyst Ross Young.
If Apple were to introduce such a foldable MacBook, it would be a major breakthrough in the industry. However, such a form factor might require some deviation from the typical physical keyboard setup, perhaps towards an all-touch-based solution akin to a giant version of the now-discontinued touch bar. If Apple does not offer an optional physical attachment for keyboards like Lenovo's X1 Fold, this transition could elicit mixed feelings among users.
Furthermore, this would be around the size of Apple's conventional MacBook screens because each half of the folding screen would measure about 14 inches, assuming Apple retains the beloved 16:10 aspect ratio. Yet, it will be interesting to note that alterability and customization levels in software regarding the whole keyboard area could either be embraced or rejected by users. In fact, maintaining trustworthiness in a software-based input solution is vital as it ensures customer satisfaction and utility, given that one of the major issues that plagued Apple's touch bar was due to its lack of reliability.
