Honor has just unveiled its Magic8 flagship cameras in China, dropping a feature that ambitious photographers in particular appreciate: the variable aperture. Like on a classic camera, this allows the amount of light entering the lens to be regulated, and a variable aperture is also very useful for special effects such as a starburst. Now that Xiaomi has also removed this feature from the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, Huawei is currently the only manufacturer still integrating a variable aperture into its flagship cameras, such as the Pura 80 Ultra.
However, another manufacturer will soon revive the feature, as has just been reported from Korea. Industry insiders have informed ETNews that Apple has finalized its plans for a variable aperture in the main camera of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. This confirms a rumor that first surfaced in November 2024. Curiously, this could now force Android manufacturers such as Samsung to bring the feature back.
Samsung already had a similar feature on the Galaxy S9 in 2018 and the Galaxy S10 in 2019, but at that time it was only possible to switch between two aperture values. On the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra, on the other hand, the aperture can be adjusted continuously between F/1.6 and F/4.0. It remains to be seen whether Apple's adoption of this camera feature will incentivize Xiaomi and others to reintroduce it at some point in the future.
