Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max: Thicker camera module than iPhone 17 Pro Max but cases still fit

We've already come across several non-functional iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max dummy models. The closer we get to the Apple launch event in September, the more detailed these plastic mockups become. They are even available in the expected iPhone 18 Pro color options. A comparison with a real iPhone is also interesting—in this case, the iPhone 17 Pro Max in Cosmic Orange. What is particularly interesting in this Techdroider comparison is the focus on the camera bump, which is clearly more pronounced in a side-by-side comparison.
Not only the camera bump but also the three cameras protrude more from the rest of the body, so it certainly looks as though Apple has integrated new features here. Anyone who has been closely following the rumor mill around the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will, of course, already know that the most likely explanation for this is the integration of a variable aperture in the main camera, a larger sensor cannot be ruled out either.
iPhone 17 Pro Max cases seem to fit
Of course we cannot rule out the possibility that the dummy models currently circulating are based on incorrect CAD models, Thus we may will still be in for a surprise at the September launch. At the moment however, it looks as though the chassis design is identical to that of its predecessor, except for the thicker camera module. This is also supported by the experiments below, which suggest that protective cases for the iPhone 17 Pro Max will still fit its successor—at least as long as they do not partially cover the camera module. A thicker iPhone 18 Pro Max case would still make sense though to better protect the new cameras. We also expect the smaller 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro to have a chassis nearly identical to its predecessor. In addition to the thicker camera the iPhone 18 Pro series is also likely to feature a smaller Dynamic Island on the front.
