Apple's FineWoven cases were notorious for showing permanent damage after just a few days of normal use. The material turned out to be extremely sensitive to scratches, dirt and liquids. A durability test now shows whether the new TechWoven protective cases for the iPhone 17 Pro will last longer.

Apple's FineWoven cases received massive criticism shortly after their launch last year because the fabric surface quickly showed clearly visible scratches and stains. In response to this criticism, Apple even removed these cases from its lineup and now offers so-called TechWoven cases instead for the iPhone 17 Pro.

The teardown experts at iFixit have now tested how well this new material holds up against liquids, dirt and scratches. The initial impression is quite positive. Not matter if it’s coffee, olive oil or hot sauce, alcohol completely removes all residues. The case also survived an initial scratch test with a key without visible damage.

This improved protection against liquids and scratches can be attributed to the smooth and apparently waterproof coating. However, this construction has two disadvantages. First, the coating does not extend all the way to the edge of the back, so liquid can penetrate and leave permanent stains where the fabric meets the plastic frame. Second, this coating can wear down over time.

iFixit intentionally damaged the coating with a knife during testing, which was enough to leave permanent coffee stains on the case. Because these stains are largely underneath the coating, cleaning the case afterward is impossible. iFixit believes that TechWoven cases will last much longer than Apple's FineWoven cases, but the expensive $59 accessories also feel like slippery plastic due to the coating, and they are still not as durable as silicone cases.
