Apple iPhone Air is twice as popular as iPhone 16 Plus, but still a flop

The Apple iPhone Air's ($999 on Amazon) price dropped considerably in some regions. For example, in Germany, the smartphone is available starting at €822, almost €380 below the list price. In contrast, the regular iPhone 17 costs at least €826, which is only around €120 cheaper than at launch. The high price drop is probably due not least to sluggish demand.
According to information from the leaker Digital Chat Station only around 700,000 iPhone Air have been activated in China so far. Ultra-thin Android smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, are said to be selling even worse, which is why, according to Digital Chat Station, no successors to the thinnest Android smartphones are planned for the time being. However, the iPhone Air is only a flop in comparison to the other models in the iPhone 17 series. Because as data from the Speedtest operator Ookla shows, the iPhone Air is much more popular than the iPhone 16 Plus, which was replaced by the thinnest iPhone.
While the iPhone 16 Plus only accounted for around 2.9 percent of all smartphones in the iPhone 16 series at launch, the iPhone Air accounted for 6.8 percent, making it more than twice as popular. In Germany, the iPhone Air only accounts for 6.1 percent of sales, while in South Korea it accounts for 11.2 percent, meaning that every ninth iPhone sold in Korea is an iPhone Air. While the iPhone Air is certainly not one of the most successful Apple products, the technology giant from Cupertino is expected to launch at least one successor on the market, possibly even two
