The Apple iPhone 17 series seems to be a success according to the latest sales analysis based on sales numbers from the US and China. That said, the iPhone Air is not doing so well compared to the other three models, as the small battery might deters some prospective buyers.

Rumors recently suggested that Apple would drastically cut production of the iPhone Air, and sales numbers from Counterpoint Research provide a specific reason for that. The iPhone Air reportedly accounted for only 3% of all sales in the first ten days since the iPhone 17 series launched in China and the US.

The iPhone 16 Plus accounted for 4%. However, sales of the iPhone Air in China don’t start until late October, so Apple's ultra-thin flagship could end up being slightly more popular than the iPhone 16 Plus (renewed from $627 on Amazon). The sluggish sales are not surprising since the iPhone Air, with an MSRP of $999, is only $100 cheaper than the iPhone 17 Pro, and its battery capacity of 3,149mAh is a whopping 26% lower compared to the 4,252mAh of the eSIM-only version of the iPhone 17 Pro that's sold in the US.

However, there are some good news as the iPhone 17 series sales are 14% higher in the first ten days than the iPhone 16 series recorded over the same time period last year. The big winner this year is the iPhone 17 base model, which got a massive display upgrade. Apple opted for a 120Hz OLED panel with an always-on feature and doubled the storage capacity of the cheapest configuration to 256GB. Nevertheless, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max still account for 75% of all iPhone sales. This is normal right after the launch, as enthusiasts tend to order a new iPhone right upon launch.
