The Best Ultra-Portable Notebooks

January 2021 update. Particularly portable notebooks, also known as subnotebooks, are known for their particularly compact build, low weight, and long battery life. They tend to be the first choice of all road warriors and users who carry around their laptop wherever they go in order to work from wherever they are. Below, you will find the best subnotebooks reviewed by us.
Sebastian Jentsch, Stefanie Voigt (translated by Finn D. Boerne), 🇩🇪 🇹🇷 ...

Subnotebooks typically bridge the gap between the performance of large laptops and the mobility of small devices such as tablets or even smartphones. More recently, 2-in-1 devices and convertibles have penetrated the subnotebook market. We categorize subnotebooks as devices that are no larger than 14-inches in screen size and lighter than 1.5 kg (~3.3 lbs) with integrated GPUs. The price range is wide and models from 300 to 2500 USD/Euros can be represented in our Top 10.

Subnotebook or ultrabook? We have created a separate Top 10 Ultrabooks list with devices meeting the Intel specifications from 2013: touchscreen, low-voltage Haswell processor (TDP: 15 W) or higher, battery life of 6 to 9 hours, Intel Wireless Display and USB 3.0. For the time being, however, our subnotebook charts will include ultrabooks and subnotebooks alike.

The table above contains an overview over the best subnotebooks reviewed by Notebookcheck over the course of the past 12 months as well as still relevant and available older products. In cases of identical score the more recent device is listed first. All prices in above table and price comparisons are updated daily and can thus differ.

1st – Apple MacBook Pro 13 2020

Apple MacBook Pro 13 2019 with Intel Ice Lake SoC
Apple MacBook Pro 13 2019 with Intel Ice Lake SoC

Apple refreshed its MacBook Pro series. Visually, the differences are minor but the 13-inch laptop (see review here) now features Intel’s Ice Lake CPUs, which means four real cores. The processor works slightly better than before. The power supply remains barely adequately dimensioned. The error-prone Butterfly keyboard has now been removed from all MacBooks.

Even though the 2020 MacBook Pro 13 only received minor updates its performance improved slightly thanks to Ice Lake.

The Retina display remains as excellent as ever and continues to run at a native resolution of 2560 x 1600 (227 PPI). Given that the display is identical to last year’s it continues to support TrueTone, just like iPads and iPhones. TrueTone automatically adjusts colors based on time and ambient light (warmer or cooler image).

The speakers remain as good as ever, and the device continues to offer four full-bandwidth Thunderbolt 3 ports. 12 hours of battery life in our Wi-Fi test are great, and even slightly longer than on the 2019 model.

2nd - Apple MacBook Air 2020 M1

Apple MacBook Air 2020 with M1-Prozessor
Apple MacBook Air 2020 with M1-Prozessor

After years of rumors Apple finally took the plunge and updated its MacBook Air with its own brand-new in-house M1 processor (see review here). The new M1 SoC is based on an ARM architecture and was already able to show its true colors in the MacBook Air 2020, and even the entry-level SKU turned out to be capable enough to easily outperform comparable Intel and AMD processors. However, the switch to a new CPU architecture also means that not all applications will continue to run, which is where Apple’s Rosetta 2 emulation steps in and ensures compatibility. The case and display are identical to its Intel predecessor.

Apple’s new M1 chip is a great fit for the MacBook Air 2020.

The display remains excellent. It runs at a native resolution of 2560 x 1600 (227 PPI), referred to as Retina by Apple. Its passive cooling ensures quiet operation at all times, and yet the device remained surprisingly cool with very low surface temperatures overall.

It continues to feature the same good speakers as well as two full bandwidth Thunderbolt 3 ports. At 16 hours in our Wi-Fi test battery life was very good, even better than on the previous Core i5 model.

3rd – HP Elite Dragonfly

HP’s Elite Dragonfly only weighs 2.4 lbs (1.1 kg)
HP’s Elite Dragonfly only weighs 2.4 lbs (1.1 kg)

The HP Elite Dragonfly [see review here] is a light-weight business convertible based on an Intel Core i5-8265U, 16 GB of RAM, and a 512 GB SSD. Its 13.3-inch touchscreen supports stylus input and offers a good contrast ratio and acceptable overall color space coverage levels. Another highlight is its long battery life. Furthermore, the HP Elite Dragonfly comes with WiFi 6, LTE, and a wide variety of security features that users will no doubt benefit from.

HP’s Elite Dragonfly turned out to be an excellent business convertible. While it has some minor flaws, they are easy to dismiss.

The compact case comes with its own set of drawbacks. For example, Intel’s Core i5-8265U was incapable of utilizing its full turbo-boost potential, and overall maintenance options are not particularly great.

4th – Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2020

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2020 with minor update
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2020 with minor update

After last year’s update to the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon this year all we get is a minor refresh (see review here). Performance improvements brought by the new SoC are minor at best, and practically unnoticeable. In return, the Wi-Fi 6 modem manages much higher data transfer rates.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon continues to forgo AMD processors, and accordingly we only see a minor update this year.

Despite the minor update this year’s Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon remains a great business notebook with a lightweight high-quality case that does not sacrifice rigidity for the sake of lightness. The low power display remains a gamble as there is still no way to tell what you are going to get – not particularly consumer friendly.

Whether or not the 2020 ThinkPad X1 Carbon is worth the switch can be discovered in our full review.

5th – Dell Latitude 7310

Dell's Latitude 7310 received a visual upgrade
Dell's Latitude 7310 received a visual upgrade

The Latitude 7310 (see review here) is a basically a fine-tuned and optimized Latitude 7300. Its Intel Core i7-10610U offers plenty of performance for everyday office tasks. That said CPU performance did not improve noticeably over the Latitude 7300. Furthermore, the compact 13.3-inch laptop comes with 16 GB of RAM, a 512 GB SSD, and Wi-Fi 6.

In our test we found that the Latitude 7310 had no issues utilizing the Core i7 to its fullest, which means that Dell’s cooling solution is very capable and, in addition, fairly quiet.

The Latitude 7310 lacks a few of the Latitude 7300’s features, which can be beneficial to road warriors and business users.

We particularly liked the Latitude 7310’s high-quality case and build quality, including Dell’s choice of material. Thanks to its carbon-fiber case the device is very light yet robust at the same time. Its input devices felt comfortable and of high quality, which should satisfy avid typists.

The Latitude 7310 is a high-quality office notebook great for everyday business and office work.

The display was fairly color accurate and offered a high contrast ratio, but a comparatively low maximum brightness which in the cost lowered the overall score noticeably.

6th - HP Spectre x360 14t

HP Spectre x360 14t
HP Spectre x360 14t

The HP Spectre x360 14t (see review here) is a well-made convertible that easily managed to secure a spot in our top 10 list. Its case and build quality are without a doubt state-of-the-art, and its display with its almost 100% sRGB color-space coverage a pleasure to look at. However, it could have benefited from a better OEM pre-calibration.

Other benefits include a comfortable keyboard, a well-made touchpad, USB Type-A and last but not least Thunderbolt 4 including Power Delivery and DisplayPort. A microSD card reader is also available.

If you don’t expect too much and are looking for a brand-new notebook for home use the HP Spectre x360 14t will make a great companion.

The price may not be justified by its performance metrics alone. However, its build quality and top modern design more than make up for it.

We do have to criticize HP for its performance, though. Despite great components the laptop was rendered incapable of fully utilizing their full potential. Its CPU is based on Intel’s latest Tiger Lake generation, including a top-of-the-line Intel Xe Graphics GPU with 96 EUs. That said even casual gamers will find the GPU’s gaming performance to be lacking.

Pricecompare

7th – Dell XPS 13 9300

Dell XPS 13 9300 with 16:10 display
Dell XPS 13 9300 with 16:10 display

Dell’s XPS 13 9300 [see review here] offers a 16:10 display and an up-to-date Intel Ice Lake CPU including Intel Iris Plus Graphics G7 GPU. As such, the compact convertible is a true jack of all trades, although gaming should definitely not be at the top of your list.

As an alternative to Apple’s MacBook the Dell XPS 13 9300 became much more attractive this year, particularly thanks to its design and the 16:10 display.

The XPS 13 9300 is Dell’s head-on attack on Apple’s MacBook sales trying to freshen up the scene. Admittedly, if you do not depend on macOS it does a great job as it offers a long list of pros. Unfortunately, the list of cons is not particularly short either.

8th – Dell Latitude 9410

Dell Latitude 9410 with very long battery life
Dell Latitude 9410 with very long battery life

Dell’s Latitude 9410 2-in-1 (see review here) is a minor improvement of its already very good predecessor, the Latitude 7400 2-in-1. However, some limitations and drawbacks still apply due to their innate similarities, such as for example the lack of dedicated GPU options or the fact that a Ryzen option remains unavailable. Dell missed its change to have their cake and eat it too. After all, Renoir APUs come with a powerful gaming-capable iGPU.

Despite the fact that the Dell Latitude 9410 2-in-1 does not feature the brightest display it still remains one of the best currently available 14-inch office convertibles.

The device is slightly heavier than other 14-inch convertibles. Its superb build quality and well-thought-out choice of material leave a great haptic feedback befitting of its price range. The Latitude 9410 2-in-1 was very energy efficient and ran for a very long time in our standardized Wi-Fi battery test. Road warriors dependent on long battery life should definitely take a closer look at it.

9th – Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga

Great office device: Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga
Great office device: Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga

Lenovo’s ThinkPad L13 Yoga [see review here] offers a fast Comet Lake processor and is the successor to Lenovo’s L390 Yoga. The input devices are at the expected level and will satisfy avid typists. In our review, the 13.3-inch convertible offered a good overall system performance. It is made of high-quailty case materials. In addition, the convertible offers fast Wi-Fi and an ActivePen Pro stylus that can be stored inside the case.

Overall, the Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga is business as usual. Great build quality and choice of material meet excellent input devices and a level of performance adequate for its price level.

Our biggest gripes were the comparatively short default warranty of just 12 months (common in the US, uncommon in Europe) and the lack of an LTE option, which would have made the L13 Yoga an even better business notebook. The rather conservative fan controller will keep the fans running at low and quiet speeds even when under load, resulting in high case temperatures and a poor multi-core performance score. If not for that, the device would have scored even higher.

10th - HP EliteBook 845 G7

HP EliteBook 845 G7 with AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 4750U
HP EliteBook 845 G7 with AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 4750U

The HP EliteBook 845 G7 (see review here) is aimed primarily at businesses for whom the AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 4750U is a great basis to build on. The SoC features an AMD Radeon RX Vega 7 GPU, and with a runtime of more than 13 hours in our Wi-Fi test the EliteBook 845 G7 shows that AMD APUs are no longer synonymous with poor battery life. The device should thus easily last a full workday. Its input devices are comfortable to use, a comfort that is quickly thwarted by the annoying high-pitched fan noise. Unfortunately, the device lacks Thunderbolt 3. In return, it supports LTE connectivity and offers decent upgradability of RAM, Wi-Fi modem, and SSD.

HP’s EliteBook 845 G7 is the fastest 14-inch business laptop we have ever reviewed.

When it comes to the display one should seriously consider the optional 400 nits panel. In addition to its higher maximum brightness it also offers more accurate colors at almost no cost to battery life.
