Ranking: Best 17-inch work laptops reviewed by Notebookcheck
Work laptops with a large 17-inch screen are ideal for users who prefer a laptop over a desktop PC due to space constraints. They very much can provide enough power for daily tasks like Web browsing, office applications, and video streaming while remaining portable enough for use around the home or office. A 17-inch display can eliminate the need for an external monitor while still allowing some mobility.
Price is a key factor in this category, with our upper limit for this list being around 1,000 dollars/euros. The models below exclusively includes notebooks that we have tested in detail. The reviews are linked for in-depth information on every device.

Editorial comment
The line separating multimedia and office use is increasingly blurred in this segment. Alongside laptops with integrated or entry-level dedicated graphics, budget gaming-friendly models with a GeForce RTX 2050, 3050 or 4050 are also common. These can be work great for work, offering solid input devices, sturdy cases, and powerful hardware. Many also include performance profiles for quieter operation when high performance isn't needed.
The 17-inch category is shrinking, especially for non-gaming models, leaving fewer pure office notebooks, many of which are aging.
Laptops with integrated or entry-level GPUs easily handle media playback, light image and video editing, and standard office tasks like Word, Excel, and web browsing. If gaming is a priority, consider models with a GeForce RTX 3050 (Ti), RTX 3060, Radeon RX 6600M, RTX 4050, or higher. For more options, check out our best budget gaming laptops list.
1st place - HP Omen 17 (2024)
A gaming laptop primarily, the Omen 17 would not look out of place sitting atop an office desk. Emissions are pleasingly low here. SKUs costing under 1,000 euros come with a fast AMD Ryzen 5 8645HS six-core processor and a fairly powerful Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050, or even RTX 4060. RAM is user-upgradable while the Full-HD display comes with 144 Hz, 100 % of sRGB and sufficient brightness at 300 cd/m².
Its real-use battery life of more than 9 hours is absolutely fine, but keyboard feedback could use some extra work. Ports aren't very numerous, either.
The HP Omen 17 is an excellent office laptop and with multiple extra perks, such as a graphics card good for entry-level gaming.
2nd place - HP Envy 17 (2024)
An office-multimedia hybrid with a 17-inch display, the Envy 17-da0076ng is closely related to the HP 17 and HP 470. Its sturdy aluminum case houses a full-size SD card reader, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, three USB-A ports, and HDMI, while lacking an Ethernet port. The base SKU includes a Full-HD IPS panel with 100 % of sRGB colors, and 290 cd/m² of brightness. Powered by a Core Ultra 7 155U, it delivers solid office performance.
The Envy is a 17-inch office notebook with multimedia ambitions, featuring a great keyboard, impressive speakers, long battery life, and a responsive touch display—though it is quite reflective.
Our test unit featured a GeForce RTX 3050, leading to higher noise levels (up to 48 dB) and case temperatures exceeding 50 °C during gaming. Battery has grown in size from 56 Wh to 86 Wh, significantly improving runtimes to over 12 hours. Additionally, its RAM is now upgradeable, not soldered.
3rd place - Lenovo LOQ 17
The LOQ 17 offers good input devices, low emissions, and a good display including 100 % of the sRGB color space, and a 165-Hz refresh rate. Lower-end SKUs powered by more affordable components such as the Core i5-13450HX and RTX 5050 can be great alternatives to other laptops in this list.
4th place - MSI Katana A17 AI (2025)
The Katana A17 AI from MSI comes with an AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS and RTX 4060 graphics. Its poor battery life of just 4 hours, and a dull display are key downsides to consider here. However, performance is high while emissions, like fan noise, are low. RAM and storage are user-upgradable, and connectivity is decent.
Display-wise, the SKU tested featured a poor Full-HD display with a brightness of only around 234 cd/m², only just sufficient for use indoors, with low sRGB coverage and a slow response rate in spite of what the refresh rate of 144 Hz suggests.
MSI's Katana A17 AI is solid, but its display is markedly below average.
The Katana costs around 1,099 euros on Amazon.de as well as Saturn at this writing.
5th place - Asus VivoBook 18
Bigger than 17: The VivoBook 18 sports a large 18.4-inch screen in a 16:10 format, despite being anything but a gaming laptop, which is unusual.
The features on offer look good. Its fast 144-Hz screen delivers full sRGB coverage, very narrow display bezels, usable max brightness of 324 cd/m² and quick response times. However, the resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels may seem a little low to some.
The AMD Ryzen 7 260 SoC offers extremely good performance that goes far beyond office tasks, while the integrated Radeon 780M is suitable for basic gaming at low quality settings. Under base performance and power profile, we measured maximum noise emissions of 40 dB(A) which is acceptable. When idling, there is a constant, quiet whisper-like sound which could probably have been done without. Its real-use battery life is very good at 11 hours.
With its VivoBook 18, Asus offers an affordable 18-inch notebook for under 1,000 euros with a lovely display and performance, RAM is not user-upgradable, and there is no USB 4.
In Germany, you currently have to pay 779 euros for the Asus VivoBook 18 (an SKU with soldered 16 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD) with Notebooksbilliger being one of your options.
6th place - Medion S20
The S20 brings a breath of fresh air to our top list of 17-inch office notebooks. Featuring a 60-Hz and 16:9 matte Full HD IPS display, it targets the lower-mid-range office segment.
Its casing is made out of aluminum and magnesium. There is no Thunderbolt or SD card reader onboard. However, the machine does offer two slots for RAM as well as 2 slots for SSDs, and supports fast charging.
Medion's 2.1-kg, 20-mm-thick 17-incher delivers solid performance with an Intel Core Ultra 7 and a 340 cd/m² bright display covering 95 % of sRGB. Mostly, it's its emissions that we are not happy with.
7th place - Medion Erazer Scout 17 E1
The Erazer Scout 17 E1 from Medion has several drawbacks for prospective buyers to consider. Its 144-Hz display only covers 56 % of sRGB, and is brightness tops out at an unimpressive 260 cd/m². Its performance is unimpressive as well, but more than sufficient for office work and more. When under load, noise emissions are on the higher side; thankfully, there is no such issue when surfing the Web.
Its keyboard offers good feedback and comes with full-size arrow keys and a complete number pad. You also get plenty of ports and decent expandability/upgradability here. However, real-use battery life could be longer at just under 4 hours.
Medion's Erazer Scout 17 E1 offers a lot for ~999 euros, but doesn't come close to some of the rival options.
8th place - Lenovo V17 G4
A classic office notebook for less than 500 euros: The V17 Gen 4 shines with a very good keyboard, easy maintenance and upgrade options, as well as moderate emissions. Its real-use battery life of around 7.5 hours is also impressive, especially considering the small 45-Wh battery, and its display delivers 300 cd/m² brightness and 90 percent of sRGB which is hardly a given in this price range.
Key disadvantages include the lack of keyboard illumination and the rather weak iGPU. There is an unoccupied slot for RAM expansion, and a full-size SD card reader, which is great, but the HDMI port only conforms to the outdated 1.4b spec. The machine's Intel U300 SoC is designed for pure office use, with performance only just matching 11th-generation mobile Intel chips like the Core i7-1185G7 (the Core i3-1315U is in the same league as well).
The Lenovo V17 G4, which delivers everything you need for pure office use but has no performance reserves for the future, is a good value product.
The SKUs with 8 GB of RAM pre-installed start at 379 euros.
9th place - Acer Aspire 17 (2024)
Our top list includes the Acer Aspire 17 only because there is little competition in the 17-inch office laptop class. Its FHD IPS display is poor, with 250 cd/m² of brightness and only 65 % of sRGB colors. The keyboard is also far from ideal, fan behavior fine-tuning is lousy, speakers are mediocre and the RTX 2050, not really faster than latest-gen integrated graphics solutions.
The 2024 Acer Aspire 17 is hardly a good choice. It fails to meet the criteria describing a good office laptop.
All in all, there are better alternatives for the money. However, the notebook is not without its merits. User-expandable RAM, Thunderbolt 4, cool case temperatures, and good performance are all worth a thumbs-up.
10th place – HP OmniBook 3 17
The OmniBook 3 17-dp0451ng is an interesting office laptop with moderate heat emissions, long real-world battery life of over 10 hours, and good speakers.
The being said, it lacks keyboard backlighting, its RAM is soldered, and casing could be sturdier. Its touchpad is poor, and so is the display's color gamut coverage (but brightness is good, at least). Performance is limited, too, with the AMD Ryzen 5 40 APU hardly being a productivity monster.
HP's 17-inch OmniBook 3 is an affordable and quiet office laptop with some significant trade-offs.
The HP OmniBook is currently priced at 499 euros in Germany.
