Medion S20 laptop review: 17-inch multimedia notebook with Intel Core Ultra 7

With the S20, Medion is launching a powerful 17.3-inch notebook with an IPS display and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The model is equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H which offers 16 cores and 22 threads, as well as an Intel Arc. Competitor models include the Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 G9, the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge 16, the Xiaomi RedmiBook Pro 16 2024, the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 16, the LG Gram 17, and the SCHENKER XMG Evo 15.

Case & features - Aluminum-magnesium housing without USB 4
The casing of the Medion S20 is made of a mixture of aluminum and magnesium, which gives the notebook a robust and comparatively light construction. With a weight of 2.1 kg and dimensions of 39.6 x 25.3 x 2.5 cm, it is relatively portable despite the 17.3-inch display. The overall build quality is solid and leaves a high-quality impression. The maximum opening angle is just under 160 degrees and the hinges are rigid and quiet. However, one-handed opening is not possible.
A total of 5 USB ports are available: three USB-A ports and two USB-C ports. Unfortunately, however, these are only USB 3.2 Gen 1, meaning that the higher data rates of USB 4 or Thunderbolt 4 are not available. The USB-C ports at least offer DP Alt-Mode and Power Delivery. A total of three external displays can therefore be operated with the laptop (1x HDMI, 2x DP).
Wireless connectivity is provided by a WiFi 6E chip (Intel AX211), which achieves solid results all round. The integrated webcam offers 2.1 MP and you shouldn't expect any miracles here. However, it should be mentioned that there is a dedicated on/off switch for the webcam. Despite the really oversized casing, there is no SD card reader or Ethernet connection.

Sustainability
Unfortunately, the laptop's packaging material is largely made of plastic. Both the power supply unit and the laptop are wrapped in plastic, although the laptop is packaged in large bubble wrap. Potential upgrades and repairs are possible with the Medion S20 laptop. The base plate is only mounted with a total of 12 screws. Caution: A total of three different screw lengths are used. As Windows 11 Home is pre-installed, software updates are guaranteed for the next few years.
Input devices - Illuminated keys, full-size keyboard and large trackpad
The large casing of the Medion S20 laptop has space for a full-size keyboard with a four-column numeric keypad. The keyboard is chiclet-style and the typing feel is very good, although the pressure point could be a little less soft. We also had problems with the 1 key on our model, which often did not respond. Thanks to the sturdy aluminum-magnesium casing, the keyboard does not give way when typing. We also liked the full-size arrow and Enter keys.
The trackpad with a glass surface is very large (approx. 14 x 9.7 cm), but still has room to maneuver vertically. The problem with the trackpad is that only the lower third can really be clicked and even then only with an unusual amount of force.
Display - 17.3-inch IPS display with weaknesses
With a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, the 17.3-inch screen offers a relatively low pixel density. Compared to competitor models such as the Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 G9 or the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 the Medion S20 with its large display offers the lowest resolution. The color coverage of the IPS display is also not particularly good, so the laptop is definitely not suitable for professional image editing. However, the brightness of 372 nits is quite solid and in combination with the matte coating, the Medion S20 notebook can also be used outdoors without any problems.

* ... smaller is better
Only the sRGB color space is covered reasonably well, but even here all selected competitors perform significantly better. We are critical of the fact that Medion advertises full coverage of the sRGB space with the sticker on the casing, but we can only measure coverage of 92%. The DeltaE values deviate even more significantly ex works, but after calibration, the deviation limit of < 2 can be achieved for both the grayscale and the colors. The calibrated profile can be downloaded free of charge at the top of the article.

Performance - Below-average Intel Core Ultra performance
The test reveals some weaknesses of the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H in the Medion S20 laptop. Both the IdeaPad Pro 5 16IMH G9, Xiaomi RedmiBook Pro 16, Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 16, LG Gram 17, and SCHENKER XMG Evo 15 use the same processor but perform slightly better in most benchmarks. The laptop is not recommended for users with particularly high performance requirements. However, if you just want to browse the internet, do office work, or play less demanding games, you can't go wrong with the Medion S20.
Test conditions
Only the standard Windows profiles are available for the performance settings. Additional performance profiles from the manufacturer are not available. The TDP can therefore not be adjusted by the user. It is 45 watts in PL1 and 60 watts in PL2. In performance mode under the Windows settings, the fans can also turn up during normal office activities, so the "Balanced" setting is recommended.

Power Limit 1 (HWInfo) | 45 watts | 45 watts | 45 watts |
Power Limit 2 (HWInfo) | 60 watts | 60 watts | 60 watts |
Processor
The installed Intel Core Ultra 7 155H offers 16 CPU cores with a total of 22 threads. The continuous multi-thread load test shows that the processor's performance remains constant and we did not notice any loss of performance after a longer runtime. The results of all benchmarks show that the processor only performs slightly worse than an average Core Ultra 7 155H. However, considering the size of the Medion laptop, there is potentially more room for better cooling of the processor, which could allow for higher power limits, which could have increased performance.

System performance
In everyday use, with conventional office, Internet, and multimedia applications, we did not notice any problems with the notebook. However, the system benchmarks show that the model consistently performs worse than the competitor models with Ultra 7 155H. The performance losses are partly due to the higher power limits of some of the competitor models, and partly because many competitor models offer faster RAM. However, as already mentioned, the model fulfills its role as a multimedia device, and in view of the size in combination with the significantly lower price compared to the competitors, we find the performance sufficient.

Graphics card
The Medion S20 also has to make concessions compared to the competition in terms of graphics performance. The Intel Arc 8 iGPU falls well short of its potential here. A look at the clock rates also shows why. The Intel Arc iGPU is actually capable of clocking up to 2.25 GHz. In the Medion S20 laptop, however, the graphics chip only reaches a maximum of 1.45 GHz. The average clock rate in our Cyberpunk benchmark is only 1.05 GHz. Furthermore, the often faster RAM in competitor models also ensures better results here.
Some games can be played with stable frame rates in throttled settings, but the model is not suitable for gaming. As external graphics solutions are not possible without USB 4 and Thunderbolt 4, this solution is also not possible.

Noise emissions
The fans of the Medion S20 laptop rev up under load but remain within limits at a maximum of just under 43 dB(A). The Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 G9 for example, is louder under load. Unfortunately, the notebook is never completely quiet even when idle, as the fans always run at a minimum. However, we do not find this disturbing in the 28 dB(A) range and should not be noticeable in most everyday scenarios.

Speaker
The built-in stereo speakers provide an acceptable sound, but you won't find any bass here. The speakers are usually sufficient for conference calls, videos, and movies. However, an external solution is recommended for audiophiles.

Battery life
Unfortunately, the relatively high power consumption of the Medion S20 laptop is also noticeable in the battery life. After just under eight and a half hours in our web browsing test, that's it. Of the competitor devices, only the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 performs worse, all other models last longer. However, at 70 Wh, the battery capacity of the Medion S20 is significantly smaller than that of its competitors, even though the 17.3-inch laptop has a very large chassis.

Verdict - Large multimedia notebook with cooling system problems
The Medion S20 is a large 17.3-inch multimedia notebook that shows some weaknesses despite good features. The aluminum and magnesium casing is solidly built and only two centimeters wide. The large display offers an acceptable Full HD resolution, but without outstanding color reproduction, which makes it less suitable for image editing. Unfortunately, USB 4 and Thunderbolt 4 are not included in the connections, but a total of three external displays can still be operated.
The Intel Core Ultra 7 and Intel Arc Graphics usually deliver worse results in benchmarks than comparable models. The biggest problem with the device is apparently the poor cooling system: The fans are always on and yet the laptop gets very hot under load.
The Medion S20 laptop is weak in many important areas that should be the focus of a multimedia notebook.
Price and availability
The Medion S20 laptop is available for 999 euros from ALDI in the online store.
