Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 review - The Copilot+ laptop's battery life of all things is disappointing

Samsung has expanded its current Galaxy Book 4 series with the Edge 14 and Edge 16, which both feature the new Snapdragon X Elite processors from Qualcomm. Both models are fitted with the same case and screens as the well-known Galaxy Book4 Pro variants. Today, we'll be testing the larger Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 with the Snapdragon X Elite (X1E-80-100), 16 GB RAM and 512 GB of storage. Its MRSP is US$1,449.99, which is around US$65 more than the comparable Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 with the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H.
In this review, we will be focussing primarily on the new Snapdragon processor as well as its effects on the laptop's emissions and battery life. Furthermore, we will also be taking a look at any other differences between the two models. For detailed information on the device's case, webcam, input devices, display and speakers, please take a look at our detailed review of the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16.

Case and connectivity
In general, the only difference the Galaxy Book4 Edge 16's case shows compared to the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 is in its color, as this model features a lighter silver with a slight bluish tinge. So the Snapdragon version is just as super slim a 16-inch laptop with a stable and high-quality metal case. The device looks elegant and its surfaces don't attract many fingerprint marks. We just aren't big fans of the wide bottom display frame.
There are no differences between the Edge and the Pro in terms of the connections themselves, but you will have to do without Thunderbolt support. However, since both USB-C ports support USB 4.0, this shouldn't be a real issue in practice.
The Edge 16 has an advantage when it comes to its Wi-Fi module, as it already supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. We don't yet have a Wi-Fi 7 router but with our Wi-Fi 6E reference router from Asus, its transfer rates in both the 5 GHz and 6 GHz networks were very good and stable. A 5G version of the Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 is not available.

Maintenance
The bottom cover is secured with four screws which are located under the inserted (not glued on) rubber feet. On the inside, however, there are some major differences to the Galaxy Book4 Pro. The two fans are identical and the battery is also accessible, but Samsung has axed the two M.2 2280 slots, instead installing soldered-on UFS 4.0 storage, which is well-known from smartphones. This is a clear disadvantage compared to the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 and as a result, neither its RAM nor its storage capacity can be expanded.
Input devices - Numeric keypad and backlighting
Its input devices are identical to those of the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 and although its keystrokes are precise, the keyboard doesn't feel the best to type on since the keys have such a short lift. People who write a lot should definitely try out the keyboard before purchasing the laptop. Three-level white backlighting is available to ensure good visibility in dark surroundings, which can be automatically activated via a sensor. The large clickpad is nice and smooth and works reliably—the click noises are just a little loud. You can also use the capacitive touchscreen for inputs. The power button is integrated into the top right of the keyboard and it also acts as a fingerprint scanner.
Display - 120-Hz OLED with a touchscreen
Samsung uses the OLED screen with the ID ATNA60CL07-0 inside the Galaxy Book4 Edge 16. The exact same panel can also be found in the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16, which is why we recommend taking a look at our review of the Pro 16 for a more detailed analysis. Subjectively, Samsung's newest OLED generation is excellent and despite it having a touchscreen, we noted no raster effect like on the older Samsung OLED inside the current Dell XPS 16. Its brightness is about 400 cd/m² in SDR operation and up to 550 cd/m² in HDR mode. In addition, Samsung has provided accurate profiles for sRGB and the P3 color space.
Performance - Snapdragon X Elite and UFS storage
Alongside our test configuration, Samsung also offers a variant with the faster Snapdragon X Elite (X1E-84-100) and a storage capacity of 1 TB for an MRSP of US$1,749.99. However, the RAM is also limited to 16 GB in this model.
We ran through our normal test course, but not all programs were compatible and lots of tests weren't available as native ARM apps. However, as you will likely be confronted with emulation during practical use, we have also included these results.
Testing conditions
Samsung offers the three usual energy profiles quiet, optimized and high performance for its ARM model, too. The optimized mode is active by default and we also used this for our measurements/benchmarks.
Energy profile | Cinebench 2024 Multi | 3DMark Steel Nomad Light GPU | max. fan noise emissions |
---|---|---|---|
Quiet | 795 points | 2,189 points | 32.4 dB(A) |
Optimized | 857 points | 2,189 points | 32.4 dB(A) |
High performance | 963 points | 2,189 points | 43.6 dB(A) |
Processor - Snapdragon X1E-80-100
Samsung offers the Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 with either the X1E-80-100 or the faster X1E-84-100 (higher dual-core turbo & multi-core clock, faster iGPU). Our test device is equipped with the X1E-80-100 which features a total of 12 cores at 3.4 GHz as well as a dual-core turbo of 4.0 GHz. All further technical details can be found in our analysis article on the new Snapdragon processors. Based on its power consumption, we assume a CPU TDP of around 23-30 watts and, as a result, comparable values with the ARM models from Microsoft. Its performance met our expectations and the Snapdragon X Elite sure is a fast processor, especially when running native applications. Regardless, its performance is perfectly adequate for everyday tasks.
Moreover, the CPU's performance remains completely stable in battery mode and under longer periods of load. Further CPU benchmarks can be found in our tech section.

System performance
In everyday use, the Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 is a fast system and even emulated applications generally don't cause any problems. However, it is important to note that not all applications will work and, in particular, accessories that require their own drivers (e.g. external sound cards, printers, scanners, etc.) may face issues.

DPC latencies
We couldn't perform our standardized latency test because the LatencyMon application can't be started on the ARM system. When playing a 4K YouTube video, we at least noted no problems with dropped frames.
Storage device
When it comes to the laptop's storage medium, Samsung hasn't used a regular PCIe SSD but instead, it has gone for soldered-on UFS 4.0 storage, which is otherwise known from smartphones and tablets. Its performance is not a problem at all and its transfer rates remain completely stable even under prolonged load. However, it can't be expanded, which means Samsung has sacrificed one of the major advantages of the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16, which has two slots for regular M.2 2280 SSDs. After first starting up the device, users have 403 GB at their disposal. Further SSD benchmarks are listed here.

Graphics card
The integrated Adreno X1-85 takes care of graphics calculations, whereby in combination with the X1E-80-100, it is the slower of the two models and has a clock rate of 1.2 GHz and 3.6 TFLOPS. During everyday use, the iGPU does a really good job and even playing back high-resolution videos is no problem for the device. Issues begin to arise when running more complex applications (the native DaVinci Resolve app doesn't run as well as expected) or playing games, for example. During our test, Qualcomm released a new beta GPU driver (31.0.60.0) which supposedly improves its compatibility—this we can confirm. As an example, we no longer noted any crashes when playing Cyberpunk 2077 and you can now also run Far Cry 5 on the Snapdragon laptop (albeit with hefty frame drops). Even so, its fundamental compatibility problems remain and in comparison to the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16, there are simply limitations.
The laptop's graphics performance itself has only been minimally improved by this new driver. The GPU's performance remains stable under prolonged load and in battery mode. Further GPU benchmarks are available here.

Noise emissions
The ARM model certainly has some advantages over the Intel variant when it comes to its fans as in idle mode and during simple applications, they are practically never active. Even under higher load, it takes a while before the fans become audible. When gaming and during the stress test with maximum CPU/GPU load, we measured a maximum of 32.4 dB(A) with the profile optimized. However, the fan noise was quite high-pitched and as a result, subjectively more annoying than the value would suggest. Using the mode high performance, they get a lot louder—we noted a peak of 43.2 dB(A). We didn't notice any other electronic noises coming from our test device during the test period.

Temperature
We can see the effects of the low fan noise emissions in how hot the laptop gets—while everything remains in the green range when performing simple tasks, the metal case simply gets too warm under load. We sometimes measured more than 50 °C and almost 10 °C more than on the Intel model. In these cases, the device should not be placed on your thighs and direct skin contact should be avoided. The keyboard area also gets noticeably warm, but this shouldn't limit its use.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 44.3 °C / 112 F, compared to the average of 36.9 °C / 98 F, ranging from 21.1 to 71 °C for the class Multimedia.

Power consumption
Our consumption measurements don't show any real efficiency advantages of the ARM laptop over the Intel variant. In fact, its power consumption is already slightly higher in idle mode. When gaming, it uses around 40 watts and in the stress test, we measured just under 62 watts at the beginning, which then levelled off at around 52 watts after a few seconds. The 65-watt power supply unit delivered with the device is therefore sufficiently powerful. We also noted its high standby consumption of almost 1 watt as a negative point.

Runtimes
The biggest surprise lies in the Galaxy Book4 Edge 16's runtimes—but unfortunately in a negative sense. We checked the results several times but in every scenario (apart from HDR video playback—5 hours for the Pro, 7 hours for the Edge), the Snapdragon Galaxy performed significantly worse than the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16. Worse still, the new Edge 16 fell behind almost all of its competitors during both the Wi-Fi test and the video test. In the Wi-Fi test at 150 cd/m², we measured just under 7.5 hours and only around 5.5 hours at full brightness. Samsung urgently needs to do something about this. Its video runtime at 150 cd/m² was better at around 14.5 hours, but even here, this is almost 5 hours less than the Intel model.
Note: The Edge 16 doesn't offer an option to reduce its frequency from 120 to 60 Hz. However, the active signal mode on the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 was always 120 Hz, so the results are comparable.

Verdict - The Galaxy Book Edge4 16 has too many disadvantages
The Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 is a large everyday laptop featuring an impressive 16-inch OLED touchscreen as well as a slim metal case. The new Snapdragon processor brings lots of advantages, such as Wi-Fi 7 and the Copilot+ functions. Its lower fan noise emissions are also an advantage in everyday use, but this comes at the cost of surface temperatures under load. Apart from this, there are pretty much only disadvantages compared to the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 with the Intel processor.
First and foremost, we have to mention the compatibility problems, as the new Snapdragon laptops face limitations compared to "regular" Windows laptops with AMD or Intel processors. This not only makes itself known when playing games or running applications, but it can also become a problem when connecting peripherals such as printers, scanners or external sound cards. Samsung at least refers to this problem on its product page. A further big disadvantage is the absence of the two M.2 2280 SSD slots. Instead, Samsung has gone for soldered-on UFS storage which is known from smartphones. Although its performance is fine, Samsung has saved some money in doing so and users are left out in the cold as soon as they wish to increase the device's storage capacity.
The Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 with the Snapdragon X Elite disappointed during our test and doesn't feature any deciding advantages over the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 with an Intel CPU. As a result of its loss of the two SSD slots, considerably shorter runtimes, limited software and hardware compatibility as well as its higher price, we aren't sure why potential buyers should decide to go for the Snapdragon variant.
The biggest advantage offered by the new Snapdragon laptops is supposed to be their better battery life. However, this simply isn't the case with the Galaxy Book4 Edge 16—in fact, its runtimes are a lot shorter than on the Intel variant. Finally, we have to mention its price which is about US$65 more than the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16. In isolation, the Edge 16 is by no means a bad device but as soon as its price and comparison with the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 are taken into account, we just can't recommend the new Snapdragon variant.
