LG gram Pro 2-in-1 16T90SP review - Light and powerful

With the LG Gram Pro series, LG is adding a new category of devices to its program. The new LG Gram Pro comes in 16 and 17-inch sizes and as a 2-in-1. The latter is our review model. When it comes to the case, the new product range is quite similar to the LG Gram SuperSlim which we put under the spotlight last year. Visually, the "normal" LG Gram 2-in-1 only has little in common with the new device. There has also been a big change to the display. Although, up to now, LG has always installed very high-quality IPS panels in all of its laptops, the 16-inch LG Gram Pro now comes with OLED displays.
The slim LG Gram Pro 16 2-in-1 is a premium device that has a starting list price of around $1,900. This means the Gram's direct completion comes in the form of the Lenovo Yoga 7 and ThinkPad X1, HP Envy, HP Spectre x360 as well as the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro x360.

Case & features
All of the LG Grams are slim and light. In recent years, there have also been few design changes. Last year, LG let the winds of change blow through its design department and the result was the LG Gram SuperSlim and the LG Gram Style. For the LG Gram Pro series, most of the design elements seen in the SuperSlim have been carried over. Only the LG Gram Pro 2-in-1's port selection is slightly more extensive. The 2-in-1 comes with two USB-A connectors and two USB-C ports. HDMI and a 3.5 mm audio jack complete the different ways you can connect to external hardware.
The black-painted case consists of magnesium which is typical for Gram laptops. The display surface is protected by glass. The LG Gram Pro 2-in-1 feels a touch more stable than your "Standard" Gram. There is little to no keyboard flex, the display is also very stiff and can only be twisted slightly. This is probably mainly due to the glass panel since the metal case is razor-thin and this is something we noticed when unscrewing the laptop.
Another important factor when it comes to 2-in-1 devices is also the hinges. In our review model, these are both equally smooth and stable. The angle of the display can be adjusted one-handed and it always stays in position.

Maintenance and warranty
LG offers a two-year warranty on all parts of the laptop excluding the charging cable which only comes with a 12-month warranty.
As is usually the case with LG's laptops, it's not particularly easy to unscrew the LG Gram Pro 2-in-1. First, you have to remove the base feet to access the screws. We feel the adhesive gets stronger every year. Additionally, we had to sharpen our nylon spudger after removing the base feet.
Five PH0 screws secure the base cover. Once these have been removed, you can pry the base off, all around the device. It's best to start with the hinges. However, you won't be able to remove the base cover without a powerful suction cup since this is also secured by clips in the middle.
Inside the laptop, you will find one free and one occupied M.2 port for 2280 M.2 NVMe SSDs. The Wi-Fi module and RAM are both soldered.
Input devices
The LG Gram Pro 2-in-1's keyboard is very flat and offers key travel which is just under a millimeter in depth. Despite this, you can type astonishingly well with the 2-in-1. The haptics of the backlit keys are significantly improved by a noticeable pressure point. The touchpad also works proficiently.
The touchscreen and stylus also work together exceptionally well. The palm recognition and the touch recognition deactivation when working with the supplied stylus work seamlessly. The stylus offers a function and eraser key and can be magnetically attached to various areas of the laptop. The stylus can also be charged on the left-hand side, as seen in the above images, meaning it doesn't require batteries.
Display
The LG Gram Pro 2-in-1 offers 2,880 × 1,800 pixels. Colors are displayed vividly and realistically on the 16:10 aspect ratio, 16-inch OLED display. Scrolling through the internet is a smooth experience thanks to the 120 Hz refresh rate.
However, unlike the recently reviewed LG Gram 17, the new 2-in-1 laptop has a glossy display with reflections spoiling the picture. In addition, there is a slightly bigger distance between the OLED panel's blue subpixels. Anyone with very good eyesight will see the many small black dots on the display, more or less clearly.
Response times, color space coverage and color accuracy are what you would expect from an OLED panel and all of the values indicate perfect images. Out-of-the-box, the display's color deviation is also very low. We recently observed the LG Gram 17 had a slight blue tint.

* ... smaller is better
In the full DisplayP3 color space, the LG Gram Pro 2-in-1 reproduces colors with low color deviations. Our info box ICC profile only provides minimal improvements. The ΔΕ2000 3 target value is significantly lower than the factory setting. This also makes the 2-in-1 suitable for professional video editing.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 481 Hz Amplitude: 33 % | ||
The display backlight flickers at 481 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) . The frequency of 481 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8445 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. |
Performance
There is a big demand for Intel's Meteor Lake from both manufacturers and customers alike without there being a particularly large selection of chips on offer. The Gram Pro also operates with an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H. Right from the word go, this APU impressed us with its powerful iGPU and NPU. Thanks to the new LPE cores, the performant processor can, if desired, run economically. The LG Gram Pro 2-in-1's processor is supported by 16GB of RAM. This ensures the laptop is powerful enough to do everything from mundane office tasks to light gaming.
Test conditions
Depending on the selected performance profile, 45 watts of boost power and 35 watts of sustained performance (PL1) are planned for the review device's power management. However, our experience with the LG Gram Pro 2-in-1 presented a slightly different picture. Even in high-performance mode, there are often not much more than 30 watts available for temperature reasons.
Since the LG Gram remains quiet when using the normal fan mode, we decided to go for this fan mode for all of our benchmarks apart from gaming. When gaming we tried to achieve the best possible framerates via the high fan mode.
Processor
The Intel Core Ultra 7 155H impressed us both with its powerful multi-core performance as well as its good iGPU and NPU with which AI applications can be accelerated. Normally, we are used to seeing that LG's laptops and 2-in-1s don't exactly boast best-in-class performance but the new LG Gram Pro 2-in-1 set us straight. The Intel Core Ultra 7 zipped through its benchmarks, delivering a significant jump in performance (and good scores) in comparison with the recently reviewed LG Gram 17 which possesses the same processor.
In normal fan mode, the 2-in-1 laptop tends to throttle quickly, as demonstrated in our Cinebench loop. Anyone requiring high performance over a longer period should select the according mode. In the high cool mode, the laptop maintained its performance.

System performance
With the relatively powerful processor, the LG Gram Pro 2-in-1 also cuts a good figure when it comes to system performance. The HP Envy managed to score a few additional points in PCMark10 due to its more powerful iGPU. However, particularly in Crossmark, we could see the considerable difference between the LG Gram and other 2-in-1 devices. The Gram's RAM and the SSD are not the fastest kids on the block and Crossmark clearly highlighted those differences.
All in all, in our comparison, all of the 2-in-1 machines performed excellently. There is no real outsider in a narrow field of competitors meaning nothing stands in the way of a smooth experience when performing work-based tasks.

DPC latencies
The LG Gram's DPC latencies are unfavorable but the other 2-in-1s in our comparison don't do any better. Only Lenovo's 2-in-1s stayed below 1000 µs. At the time of reviewing and using their current software configurations, all the other 2-in-1s and laptops ought to have problems with real-time applications.

Mass storage
When it comes to read speeds, the SK Hynix SSD housed in our review device occupies a mid-table place. However, the SSD's read speeds are comparatively high. In our read performance continuous test, the RAM tends to throttle slightly after a short while but then it recovers quickly, continuing at unreduced speed.

Graphics card
The Intel 8-core Arc iGPU is one of the fastest iGPUs on the market. Depending on the benchmark or program, it is sometimes faster or slower than the AMD Radeon 780M. In the LG Gram, this graphics chip works flawlessly. We could even say that this is the first LG laptop we have reviewed that impressed us with its graphics performance. This means the 2-in-1 laptop does well when it comes to gaming performance. Most of the current titles should run smoothly, at least at low or medium-quality settings.

Noise emissions
LG's smart assistant offers four fan profiles which provide the desired noise level or performance, depending on the environment or application. In our measurements, the normal fan mode reached a maximum of 37 dB(A). The high fan mode is louder by around 4 to 5 dB(A). In the silent mode, the fans spin occasionally. However, during testing, at 26 dB(A), the laptop was not much louder than room tone. You can only hear a slight noise with your ear held close to the 2-in-1.

Temperature
So far we have observed that the laptop is relatively powerful, quiet and slim. But, the heat given off by the processor and the rest of the hardware has to go somewhere. It appears that too much heat is dissipated over the case. We measured temperatures of up to 55.4 °C on the base of the LG Gram Pro 2-in-1 in our stress test with Fluke t3000. Nevertheless, these are only small areas which get unpleasantly warm on the 2-in-1's top and base. By contrast, under moderate load, the laptop doesn't heat up all that much. It's also worth adding that the Gram's matte black coating ensures that the FlirOne Pro doesn't display exact temperatures. For this reason, the heat images below should only be treated as a reference.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 34.5 °C / 94 F, compared to the average of 35.4 °C / 96 F, ranging from 19.6 to 60 °C for the class Convertible.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 55.4 °C / 132 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 24.7 °C / 76 F, compared to the device average of 30.3 °C / 87 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 22.5 °C / 72.5 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(+) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28 °C / 82.4 F (+5.5 °C / 9.9 F).

Speakers
The review device's speakers are also impressive. We noticed superior sound quality that was only spoiled slightly by overemphasized mids.

Power consumption
Our review device came with a USB-C power supply that can deliver a maximum of 65 watts. The LG Gram Pro 2-in-1 doesn't use this to the very last watt. Our power measurements were recorded using the normal fan mode and we observed the consequences of throttling here too. Periodically, the CPU is throttled down to maintain the specified temperature limits.

Battery life
With its 77 Wh battery, the Gram Pro ran for considerably longer than 9 hours in our Wi-Fi internet surfing test. There is not a big difference between the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro x360 and our review device when it comes to battery life. All of the 2-in-1s and laptops in our comparison, except the Thinkpad X1, use batteries with a capacity of between 70 Wh to 80 Wh. The fact that OLED displays are not particularly battery-friendly can be seen clearly in both the recently reviewed Gram devices and the Yoga 7. Last year's LG Gram 17 and the LG Gram 2-in-1 have significantly better stamina away from the wall. These devices use an IPS display.

Verdict
LG has taken the Pro in the new LG Gram Pro 2-in-1's name seriously. We can see significant improvements both in terms of the 2-in-1's power as well as its soft skills compared to LG's normal Gram 2-in-1. The review device stands out from the masses with good sound, a wonderful display and also very good battery life. And, at the same time, the LG Gram Pro 2-in-1 still manages to be light and stylish. The Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro x360 has received serious competition.
With the new Gram Pro, LG is emerging from the performance doldrums that were often a reason to decide against opting for the Gram. We will now have to revise our assessment of the LG Gram 2-in-1 from our previous review. LG has manufactured a light machine with high-level performance and, once again, it takes its place among the lightweight laptops.
LG has taken the Pro name seriously and has delivered a 2-in-1 that elevates itself considerably from the standard Gram. The LG Gram Pro 2-in-1 manages to be slim, powerful, quiet, and mostly cool.
The new Intel Meteor Lake processor in the Gram Pro 2-in-1 certainly contributes to the success of the device. But, LG has done a decent amount of work and repeated its familiar routine seen in previous years. LG's 2-in-1 could be a killer for the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro x360 since it offers comparable and sometimes better performance. Lenovo currently doesn't have a 16-inch 2-in-1 in its Yoga 7 or Yoga 9 range of devices with the Core Ultra der H series.
Price and availability
At the time of reviewing, the LG Gram Pro 2-in-1 is available directly from LG for $2,099.
