Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 review - An extremely slim 2-in-1 with the Core Ultra 5 and 120 Hz AMOLED ↺

Samsung has updated its large, 16-inch, 2-in-1 with the fourth generation getting Intel's new Meteor Lake processors. The Pro variant uses the new Core Ultra chips and the regular Galaxy Book4 360 (15.6-inch) is equipped with the weaker U series chips.
Our review device is the cheaper version of the Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 with the Core Ultra 5 125H, the high-resolution OLED display, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD for an RRP of $1,699. Optionally, there are even more expensive models with the Core Ultra 7 155H as well as a 1 TB SSD & 16 GB of RAM for $1,899 or with 32 GB of RAM for $2,099.

Case - A slim, aluminum 2-in-1
Externally, the Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 doesn't differentiate itself from its predecessor. The gray, aluminum case (Moonstone Gray) looks very premium and the first time you pick it up you will be surprised how slim the device feels. Overall, the design is very understated and only the thick bottom bezel is somewhat annoying. The metal surfaces are not particularly prone to fingerprints and can also be easily cleaned. Despite the slim base unit, the stability is very good and the keyboard area only gives slightly when pressed. In addition, there are no creaking noises to speak of.
Likewise, the lid is very stable and, being a 2-in-1, the display can be opened entirely. The problem here, however, is the hinges, which are not tight enough. Even slight vibrations result in noticeable screen wobble and this could quickly prove annoying (e.g. on a train). The supplied S Pen is either held magnetically on the lid or the front of the base unit.
With a height of just 13 mm, the review device is the thinnest device among our comparison machines - and by some distance. However, when it comes to the footprint, the wide screen bezel is noticeable and quite deep. In addition, at a touch under 1.7 kg, it is very light with only the LG Gram weighing less. The 65-watt power adapter weighs 163 grams.
Features - Thunderbolt 4 & HDMI 2.1
In addition to the modern USB-C interfaces which include Thunderbolt 4, the Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 also offers a regular USB-A port as well as HDMI 2.1. However, one of the USB ports is used for the power adapter. There can be no criticism regarding the port distribution in the rear area of both sides of the device.
SD card reader
Together with our reference card, the (Angelbird AV Pro V60), the microSD card reader on the right-hand side achieved average transfer speeds of ~77-87 MB/s. Unfortunately, the reader itself (spring mechanism) is problematic since the attachment point sits very deep inside the case, making it difficult to slide the card in or remove it without having to use a tool/aid.

Webcam
There are no changes when it comes to the 1080p webcam and the quality continues to be average. There is neither a mechanical shutter nor an IR module for face recognition. Thanks to the Meteor Lake chip's new NPU, Studio Effects (background blur, eye contact, head tracking) for the webcam are supported directly from the operating system regardless of the app used.

Maintenance
On the base, there are four hidden screws under the rubber feet. The bottom case cover sits very firmly even without the screws due to the retaining clips in the middle. Unlike the normal Galaxy Book4 Pro, there is only one M.2 slot. If desired, the screwed battery can be replaced but all of the other components are soldered.
Input devices - Huge touchpad, average keyboard
Samsung has equipped the Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 with a keyboard and a numerical pad, both of which we have already seen in the significantly bigger Galaxy Book4 Ultra. The typing experience suffers slightly due to the short key travel as well as noticeable key strike noises. With the slimmer base unit, the short travel is easier to swallow than with the Ultra, but, in a direct comparison with the regular Galaxy Book4 Pro, the strikes don't appear as precise. In this discipline, the Samsung laptop also lags behind the competition and, in particular, the HP Spectre x360 16. It has the upper hand here but doesn't offer a numerical pad. Anyone who types a lot would be best advised to try out the keyboard beforehand. The power button on the top right simultaneously serves as a fingerprint scanner. The white backlighting offers three intensity levels 3 and can be activated automatically.
Although swiping gestures are implemented very well on the huge clickpad (15.1 x 10.8 cm), it finds itself located slightly to the left of center. The bottom part of the pad can be clicked but this is accompanied by rather loud and cheap-sounding click noises.
The S Pen, a small, inductively charged stylus is also included and can be magnetically attached to some parts of the casing. It works flawlessly and offers 4,096 pressure sensitivity levels.
Display - 120 Hz AMOLED
Samsung only offers its Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 with a 16-inch OLED touchscreen (2,880 x 1,800 pixels, 16:10). With vibrant colors and deep blacks, the subjective image quality is wonderful. The response times are very fast and HDR content is supported. Thanks to its 120 Hz frequency, movement is also very smooth. As with every Windows device, the HDR mode has to be activated manually but this means color management is no longer available. Both the brightness and the color temperature can be adjusted via Sensor. The OLED panel uses 240 Hz PWM at every brightness level.
In SDR mode, the maximum brightness sits at an average of 392 cd/m² and the black value is 0 cd/m². This leads to a try high contrast ratio. We measured a maximum HDR brightness of 550 cd/m² in image sections or 540 cd/m² when a completely white image is displayed. The HDR capabilities are significantly more limited compared to mini LED panels.

In Samsung's settings app, there are various color profiles and, as standard, the active one is "Vivid". As usual, the colors are somewhat oversaturated which makes images appear a touch more vibrant. However, there is also a P3 mode which mostly offers accurate colors out of the box and this is the mode we used for our measurements. Using our own calibration, we were unable to improve this performance. The panel covers both the sRGB and P3 color spaces completely and anyone who likes editing images will also enjoy the similarly accurate sRGB mode.

The display backlight flickers at 240 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 100 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 240 Hz is relatively low, so sensitive users will likely notice flickering and experience eyestrain at the stated brightness setting and below. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8564 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. |
Basically, the OLED touchscreen is glossy, but, thanks to the use of Corning Gorilla Glass DX, the panel is less reflective compared to other glossy displays. In this area, Samsung is on par with Apple's MacBooks. In principle, you can also use the device outdoors on sunny days as long as you avoid direct light source reflections. The viewing angle stability is very good but, with larger deviations, the typical OLED blue shimmer is present.
Performance - Raptor Lake has been replaced by Meteor Lake
Samsung offers the Galaxy Book4 Pro either with the new Core Ultra 5 125H (paired with 16 GB of RAM) or the Core Ultra 7 155H which is also available with 32 GB of RAM. The manufacturer has opted against using GPUs and instead relies on the new Intel Arc integrated graphics adapter.
Test conditions
In the preinstalled Samsung settings app, there are various energy profiles at your disposal. For the following benchmarks and measurements, we used the Optimized profile which is active as standard.
Processor - Core Ultra 5 125H
The Core Ultra 5 125H from Intel's current Meteor Lake generation offers 4 fast performance cores and 10 efficiency cores (a total of 14 cores/18 threads) and achieves a maximum speed of up to 4.5 GHz. In addition to the low clock speed, the Core Ultra 5 lacks two performance cores compared to the Core Ultra 7 155H. In the case of the Galaxy Book4 Pro 360, the processor can briefly consume up to 64 watts but quickly settles to around 30 watts, after a few minutes.
Basically, under a brief period of load, the performance is decent but then drops (~35 %) and under sustained load, the new model is even marginally slower than the old Galaxy Book3 Pro 360 with the Core i5-1340P (34 watts under sustained load). Nevertheless, the overall performance is quite sufficient for everyday tasks. In battery mode, the CPU performance doesn't get reduced. Additional benchmarks are available in our technology section.

DPC latencies
Like the predecessor, our standardized latency test (surfing the internet, 4K YouTube playback, CPU load) highlighted that the review device and its current BIOS version would have considerable limitations when it comes to using real-time audio applications.

Mass storage
In the review device, Samsung has installed the 512 GB variant of the PM9B1 and, although we are dealing with a PCIe 4.0 SSD, the transfer speeds sit at a maximum of ~3,5 GB/s which is more akin to PCIe 3.0. In everyday situations, that doesn't matter, however, given the high asking price, we are a little surprised. At least the performance also remains stable under longer periods of load. Using the 2-in-1 for the first time, the user has access to 412 GB. Additional SSD benchmarks can be found here.

Graphics card
The new Intel Arc Graphics with 7 Xe cores (112 EUs) has a maximum core speed of 2.2 GHz and it works in tandem with the Core Ultra 5 125H. For everyday multimedia tasks, including the playback of high-resolution videos, the iGPU is more than up to the task and there are significant performance increases compared to the old Iris Xe GPUs. In the synthetic benchmarks, the gap behind the Arc GPU with 8 Xe cores is about 10 % and the 7-core model hovers around the level of an AMD Radeon 780M.
We observed a different state of affairs in the gaming tests, although the situation has improved in the past few weeks. When gaming, there are sometimes problems with frame rate fluctuations meaning some games (for example Witcher 3) are also hardly playable at high details. Basically, when it comes to gaming, the new Arc GPUs are unable to confirm the good synthetic test performance results, clearly lagging behind the Radeon 780M. However, we expect the situation to improve due to forthcoming driver updates.
Under sustained load, it's worth pointing out that the GPU performance remains unstable and, at 77.3 %, it also doesn't pass the 3DMark stress test (Time Spy). In battery mode, the GPU remains on the same level. Additional GPU benchmarks are available here.

Emissions - A Samsung 2-in-1 with a silent mode
Noise emissions
Samsung's cooling solution has two fans and a heat pipe. In real-world situations, the fans kick in very quickly, however, at 26 dB(A), the first fan level is almost inaudible. If the device is pushed, you can hit 35-39 dB(A), depending on the load. This can be clearly heard and the fan's frequency is anything but pleasant. With the energy profiles you can hugely influence the maximum noise level (High Performance: 42.4 dB(A), Silent: 31.2 dB(A)) and there is even a Still mode with which we were unable to detect any fan noise, even in the stress test. (which, of course, comes at the cost of performance). No other electronic noises were present in our review device.

Temperature
Given the slim base unit, the surface temperatures remain astonishingly low. In everyday use, the device hardly heats up and, even under high load, we didn't record temperatures of 40 °C or higher, anywhere on the device. These are very good results meaning you will not encounter any limitations when using the 2-in-1. However, the flip side is low performance. In the stress test with combined CPU/GPU load, settles very quickly to 24 watts.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 38.6 °C / 101 F, compared to the average of 35.4 °C / 96 F, ranging from 19.6 to 60 °C for the class Convertible.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 39.2 °C / 103 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 24.5 °C / 76 F, compared to the device average of 30.3 °C / 87 F.
(±) Playing The Witcher 3, the average temperature for the upper side is 32.2 °C / 90 F, compared to the device average of 30.3 °C / 87 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 27.5 °C / 81.5 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28 °C / 82.4 F (+0.5 °C / 0.9 F).

Speakers
The sound system consists of 4 modules (2x 5W woofer + 2x 2W tweeter) and the result is also good given the extremely thin base unit. Nevertheless, competitors such as the HP Spectre x360 16 offer better speakers. However, without a direct comparison, you won't really be disappointed and you will even be able to frequently do without external speakers.

Power consumption
When it comes to OLED devices, the power consumption strongly depends on the displayed content. At a maximum of 6.5 watts, the idle values are very low for a 16-inch device - especially with Samsung's standard, dark wallpaper. In the stress test, the 2-in1 briefly reaches the power adapter's limit of 65 watts but very quickly settles to around 50 watts.

Battery life
Nothing has changed regarding the 76 Wh battery and, just like the faster Galaxy Book4 Ultra, the device's active signal mode remains at a constant 120 Hz, even if you select 60 Hz. In the Wi-Fi test at 150 cd/m² (representing 66 % of the review device's maximum SDR brightness), we measured just short of 9 hours which is around 50 minutes less than the predecessor. At full brightness, the runtime drops to only 6 hours. In the video test, once again, the advantages of having both additional low-power efficiency cores can be seen with a very good runtime (for a 16-inch device) of almost 15 hours. An HDR video at full brightness can be played for nearly 5.5 hours. The device finds itself lagging behind the competition, especially when it comes to the Wi-Fi test. With the device switched on, a full charging cycle takes around 2.5 hours.

Pros
Cons
Verdict - The Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 is an extremely thin but otherwise average 2-in-1
The new Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 is a large, 16-inch 2-in-1 and has a particularly impressive, premium aluminum case. Despite also being extremely thin, the device packs a decent selection of ports which include Thunderbolt, HDMI and a regular USB-A connector. An additional advantage is the high-resolution OLED display which wowed us with its subjectively good image quality and accurate colors. Likewise, HDR is supported but the Windows way of handling HDR content continues to be anything but perfect.
Regarding performance, the new Meteor Lake processor can only partially impress since the cooling cannot ensure high performance for very long and, in terms of the SSD, Samsung has only gone for a moderately fast storage drive. However, for everyday tasks, (surfing the internet, writing emails, creating presentations etc.), it's still more than sufficient. One further positive aspect is the low surface temperatures, even under full load.
The Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 is a stylish and pricey 2-in-1 for everyday situations that is particularly impressive due to its good OLED touchscreen and slim case.
Apart from that, there is a lot of average to be found in areas such as the fans, input devices, speakers and also the battery life. Genuine disadvantages are the constant PWM flickering as well as the soldered RAM. All in all, the Galaxy Book4 Pro 360's positive qualities help it gather many points and this is why it earns a very good overall score of 88 %. An additional problem is the high RRP together with the poor storage specs, although, they should also meet a casual user's requirements.
However, with the HP Spectre x360 16, there is a significantly better competitor which also uses a Samsung OLED display, has advantages in many areas and is even cheaper despite being better equipped.
Price and availability
