Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 Laptop Review: Samsung's alternative to the Apple MacBook Air 15
The Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro is a flat 16-inch multimedia laptop with a thin chassis and a high-resolution AMOLED screen that aims to win over customers. However, when looking at the data sheet, it quickly becomes clear that Samsung's target group here is by no means pro users but customers who need a high-quality device for everyday tasks.
Although Samsung has installed a current gen Meteor Lake processor from Intel, there is no option for a dedicated graphics card and the maximum RAM is limited to 16 GB.
The price of €1,999 (Core Ultra 7 155H, 16 GB RAM, and 512 GB SSD) is quite high, making the Galaxy Book4 Pro on a par with the Apple MacBook Air 15 M3 with comparable memory capacity.

Chassis and equipment: Same aluminum construction as before
The chassis design has not changed compared to the old model — Samsung continues to use a very high-quality and sturdy aluminum construction with dark grey surfaces. The design is minimalist, and the surfaces are not particularly susceptible to fingerprints.
The only thing that really bothers us about the design is the wide bottom edge of the screen, which is why the device is quite deep. The stability of the flat base unit and the lid is very good and there are no creaking noises.
The hinges are properly adjusted, and the maximum opening angle is 135°. The bottom cover can be removed (note that there are four hidden screws under the rubber feet) and there is space for two M.2 SSDs inside, but all other components including the RAM are soldered.
Despite the 12.5 mm thin base unit, connectivity options are good with Thunderbolt 4, a full HDMI output and a regular USB-A port. You will be able to manage without an adapter most of the time in everyday use.
The microSD card reader is a little awkward to use as it is difficult to insert the cards (the spring stop is very low). The transfer rates with our reference card (Angelbird AV Pro V60) are average at around 80 MB/s.
The WLAN module does not support the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard, but the Intel AX211 module supports 6 GHz networks, and the overall performance was very good and stable in our test. The 1080p webcam offers average performance and supports Windows Studio Effects such as soft focus, tracking, and others.
The Galaxy Book4 Pro is by far the thinnest Windows device in our comparison group, but there are no significant differences in weight. Apple's MacBook Air 15 is slightly thinner (which can be clearly seen in a direct comparison) and is also more compact overall due to the slightly smaller screen.

Input devices: Backlit keyboard with numpad
The black keyboard sports a dedicated numpad and has a three-stage white illumination. We are already familiar with the short stroke typing experience from the Galaxy Book4 Ultra and the Galaxy Book4 Pro 360, but the keyboard on the Galaxy Book4 Pro is a little more precise and thus a bit more comfortable.
Nevertheless, we would recommend frequent typists to try out the keyboard first. The large clickpad does not cause any problems, save for the slightly loud clicking noise. Alternatively, the capacitive touchscreen is also available for inputs.
Display: Very accurate 120 Hz OLED
The 16-inch OLED touchscreen (2,880 x 1,800 pixels) offers excellent subjective picture quality, and the 120 Hz refresh rate enables smooth operation. The colors are very vibrant and black content is truly black. However, the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 also employs a 240 Hz PWM at all brightness levels. The measured response times are very fast.
The maximum brightness in SDR mode is 395 cd/m² and this goes up to 550 cd/m2 in HDR mode. However, HDR mode must be activated manually. The zero black level lends itself to an infinite measured contrast ratio.

* ... smaller is better
Samsung offers various color profiles and the preset Vivid mode is somewhat oversaturated, but this ensures a more vibrant color reproduction in everyday use. However, there is also a very accurate P3 mode, which is the one we used for the measurements.
Both the grayscale and the color reproduction are very accurate, and we couldn't improve the display any further with our own calibration. Those who like to edit images will also be pleased with the color-accurate sRGB mode.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 240 Hz | ≤ 100 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 240 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 100 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 240 Hz is relatively low, so sensitive users will likely notice flickering and experience eyestrain at the stated brightness setting and below. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17903 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
The touchscreen is reflective, but not as reflective as other glossy panels. Apart from direct sunlight, the Galaxy Book4 Pro can therefore also be used outdoors. The viewing angle stability is very good.
Performance: Galaxy Book4 Pro with Core Ultra 7 155H and 16 GB RAM
Test conditions
Samsung offers various energy profiles and we used the default Optimized profile for the benchmarks and measurements.
Processor
The Intel Core Ultra 7 155H is the successor to the Core i7-13700H and in the case of the Galaxy Book4 Pro, it can consume a maximum of 64 W for a short period. The consumption drops to around 40 W and then further down to 28 W.
The performance in the benchmarks is, therefore, very good and there are no problems in everyday use either. Under continuous load, however, the performance drops by just over 20% and the multi-core performance is also slightly reduced in battery mode.

Mass storage
Samsung installs the 512 GB version of the PM9B1 NVMe SSD, whereby 407 GB is still available after the first start-up. Although it is a PCIe 4.0 SSD, the transfer rates are more in line with a PCIe 3.0 SSD.
This is perfectly adequate for everyday use, but Samsung saves money here and could have installed a faster drive for the high price.
Additional SSD benchmarks can be found here.

Graphics card
The GPU workload is handled by the new Arc Graphics iGPU with 8 Xe cores from Intel's Meteor Lake generation. The performance compared to the old Xe Graphics G7 is practically doubled in the synthetic tests. The Arc iGPU is also able to improve upon the Radeon 780M from AMD.
Apple's M3 GPU with 10 cores is 43% faster in the 3DMark Wildlife Extreme Unlimited test, and the performance of the Arc iGPU does not remain completely stable under constant load. This can also be seen in The Witcher 3 1080p Ultra long-term test.
The performance in synthetic benchmarks cannot always be confirmed in gaming, but we generally had fewer problems with frame drops with the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 than with other Meteor Lake devices. We expect the situation with the new Arc iGPUs to improve with future driver versions. The performance remains constant in battery mode.
Additional GPU benchmarks can be found here.

Emissions and energy: Tolerable and economical
Noise emissions
Samsung uses two fans in the Galaxy Book4 Pro 16, and the fans are often deactivated or are very quiet during simple tasks. However, the fans quickly reach the maximum 40 dB(A) in the Optimized energy profile when the laptop is pushed hard.
The laptop is even quieter with the two profiles Quiet (max. 34.1 dB(A)) and Silent (max. 26.4 dB(A)). In High Performance mode, we measured a maximum of 44.8 dB(A). There were no other electronic noises or coil while observed in our test device.

Temperature
There are no problems with the surface temperatures. The chassis hardly warms up when idling and under low load. In the stress test, we measured a maximum of just under 43 °C on the underside and 41 °C on the top of the base unit.
This is perceivable, of course, but there are no restrictions during use. In the stress test, we briefly see a maximum of 65 W that drops to 40 W for a few minutes before the processor levels off at ~28 W.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 40.9 °C / 106 F, compared to the average of 36.9 °C / 98 F, ranging from 21.1 to 71 °C for the class Multimedia.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 42.6 °C / 109 F, compared to the average of 39.1 °C / 102 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 24.1 °C / 75 F, compared to the device average of 31.2 °C / 88 F.
(±) Playing The Witcher 3, the average temperature for the upper side is 34.1 °C / 93 F, compared to the device average of 31.2 °C / 88 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 28.6 °C / 83.5 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.8 °C / 83.8 F (+0.2 °C / 0.3 F).

Battery life
The battery capacity remains unchanged at 76 Wh. Compared to the Galaxy Book3 Pro 16, the WLAN runtime at 150 cd/m² (corresponds to 66% of the maximum SDR brightness) and 120 Hz is around 30 minutes better with the Book4 Pro 16 at 10:44 hours. Only the MSI Prestige 16 with a larger 99.9 Wh battery and the MacBook Air 15 can boast significantly longer runtimes.
At full brightness, the WLAN runtime is reduced to 7.5 hours and the video test at 150 cd/m² runs for 19 hours. The benefit of two additional low-power Xe cores of the Meteor Lake processors are noticeable here. An HDR video at full brightness can be played for just over 5 hours.
Fast charging is not available on the Samsung laptop, and it takes 143 minutes for the battery to fully charge.
Note: Even when 60 Hz was selected, the active signal mode of the test device remained at 120 Hz.

Verdict: Very good but expensive everyday laptop
Don't be fooled by the name, because the new Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 is by no means a pro device but a slim everyday laptop with a high-quality build and a vibrant OLED screen. The performance is perfectly adequate for common applications and the new Arc graphics card can also cope with many games. Furthermore, you don't need to always lug around an adapter and the battery life is decent as well.
The OLED touchscreen offers excellent subjective image quality and Samsung also provides accurate profiles for the P3 and sRGB color space, which makes it amenable to edit images/videos without any problems. However, the constant PWM flickering at 240 Hz and the awkward handling of HDR content are some disadvantages, although HDR is a Windows problem in general.
Samsung's new Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 is a high-quality, but also expensive computer for everyday tasks. In addition to the high price of €2,000, the 16 GB RAM limit is particularly annoying.
The Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 scores points in many categories and therefore achieves a very good overall result, but the price-performance ratio is weak. The limitation of 16 GB soldered RAM is particularly incomprehensible at this price, as the convertible Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 is sold at a relatively low price and is also available with 32 GB RAM.
The Windows competition uses slightly thicker cases, but there are advantages here, such as a better feature list or, as in the case of the Schenker Vision 16, an IPS panel without PWM and replaceable RAM.
Apple offers the even thinner MacBook Air 15 M3 for a comparable price. Although the multi-core performance is somewhat lower here, it is absolutely sufficient for everyday use, and you get a completely silent device. The Air's 15.4-inch screen is slightly smaller and there is no high refresh rate or HDR support, but there is no PWM flickering either.
The MacBook Air 15's battery life is also better, but Samsung has the edge when it comes to connections and SSD expandability. In terms of pricing, the two models are on par with each other.
Price and availability
The new Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 can be ordered directly from Samsung (DE) for €1,999. Other stores also have the model listed, such as Amazon US, for example.
