Tecno seeks to demonstrate that rollable smartphones are now closer to becoming a thing with the new Phantom Ultimate. The new prototype is capable of expanding its ~6.5-inch display into one of over 7 inches in diagonal length with "industry-leading unrolling speed" thanks to a range of engineering breakthroughs. It also supports more familiar, potentially welcome, specs such as a 1–120Hz refresh rate and an always-on display (AOD) mode.

With the emergence of devices such as the Lenovo expanding laptop concept, not to mention the Motorola Rizr (and despite the sad demse of the LG Explorer Project), it seems that rollable-display devices might be in their ascendancy after all. Should that be the case, Tecno now hints that it will be right there with smartphones based on its latest Phantom Ultimate concept.

With its "ultra-slim" design that brings its height down to just 9.93mm in parts, the Ultimate recalls the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha in looks to some degree. However, what looks like a 6.55-inch On-cell AMOLED display that wraps around for a "Double Sided" secondary-display feature on its rear side is in fact capable of unleashing a total length of 7.11 inches in its fully 'unfurled' mode - and in just 1.2-1.3 seconds too.

The last of those Phantom Ultimate upgrades is touted to address a particular "pain point" of rollable devices, which might indeed prove patience-sapping and impractical in real-world devices. Tecno claims to have overcome the issue thanks to custom internals such as a new "high torque" powertrain and a "single-drive motor system". Together, they make for a "neat mechanism" rated to minimize juddering, lagging and (possibly most importantly) creasing in the new concept rollable phone.

On that note, Tecno asserts that the Ultimate is already equipped to act as a smartphone with a 2296x1596 resolution, a peak brightness of 1,100cd/m2, 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and "dynamic LTPO" for a display with "registered polling"-based input-response within its UI.

The Phantom Ultimate is even depicted as packing conventional-looking triple rear camera rings and a 'grip-friendly' rear panel. Therefore, Tecno seems confident that its real-world successors could indeed become part of its "Go Premium" product strategy one day.
