IFA 2023 | Sony Xperia 5 V: New compact flagship launches with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, 5,000 mAh battery and 48 MP camera from Xperia 1 V
Sony has now unveiled the Xperia 5 V, its second flagship smartphone of the year after the Xperia 1 V. As expected, the Xperia 5 V is more than just a scaled-down Xperia 1 V. Specifically, Sony has dropped any form of telephoto lens from this year's Xperia 5. Instead, the Xperia 5 V will produce zoomed-in shots using its primary camera, which it appears to borrow from the Xperia 1 V.
As such, the Xperia 5 V features a 48 MP primary camera that outputs by default at 12 MP. Additionally, the camera has a 1/1.3-inch optical format, a 24 mm equivalent focal length, is optically stabilised and supports autofocus. Moreover, Sony equips the Xperia 5 V with 12 MP ultra-wide-angle and front-facing cameras, which have 1/2.5-inch and 1/2.9-inch optical formats, respectively. Please note that neither are optically stabilised; the front-facing camera is fixed focus, too.

According to Sony, the Xperia 5 V measures 154 x 68 x 8.6 mm and weighs under 180 g. Thus, the device is about as large as its predecessor, albeit with a 2 mm shorter but 1 mm wider and 0.4 mm thicker housing. Predictably, Sony has moved the Xperia 5 series onto Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform that it complements with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of expandable storage globally.
Other elements remain unchanged though, such as the 6.1-inch OLED display, which remains a 1080p and 21:9 panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Likewise, the Xperia 5 V carries over its predecessor's 3.5 mm jack, as well as its front-firing stereo speakers and 5,000 mAh battery that supports 30 W wired charging. So far, Sony has confirmed that the Xperia 5 V will retail for €999 in three launch colours. A release date remains unknown at the time of publication.
