When it comes to innovative designs that manage to become successful, the smartphone market has been struggling for a while. Although the foldable handsets currently on the market are quite interesting and more reliable in the long run than the first attempts that arrived before 2020, these are still niche products. Already fielding the foldable Razr 5G, Motorola is now trying to take the expandable smartphone concept one step further with a design that rolls down from the top.
The screen of the Motorola concept phone, which was unveiled at the Lenovo Tech World 2022 virtual event, expands and contracts with the press of a button. With a regular size of 5 inches, the display of the phone unfolds to a 6.5-inch screen, while the interface self-adjusts as needed. These dimensions make the Motorola concept smaller than the iPhone 13 mini when in compact mode, but roughly the same size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max when expanded.
Back in August, Motorola announced the third-generation Razr in China. Recent rollable smartphone concepts, unveiled by companies like Samsung and TCL, have screens that expand horizontally to switch between smartphone and tablet mode. Motorola comes with the idea of a compact smartphone that can turn into a smartphone with a larger display, which might be what the market is missing at this time. Sadly, this is only a concept for now and might never make it to the market, but at least the design approach could be used by Motorola in future products.
Right now, Samsung is leading the global foldable market, with a generous market share of 62 percent. Huawei is following far behind, with just 16 percent. Unfortunately, Motorola is in the "others" category, which includes a long list of brands and accounts for 18 percent of foldable smartphones shipped in the first half of the year.
