One of Samsung's latest tablet patents show edges so thick (especially compared to the OEM's Galaxy Tab S10+, now $849.99 on Amazon) one might think it is intended to be a new rugged (or Active) variant. However, the rest of its images show that there is a good reason for the apparently retrograde design.
The chunky frame is capable of coming apart at the top and bottom in order to let the slate's display to extend outward, seemingly until it gains another ~66% on its original length. Accordingly, the IP might represent a use for Samsung Display's current Rollable Flex OLED prototypes.
The tablet is also depicted as capable of housing a stylus along its top, dual cameras to the rear and a bottom-mounted USB-C port, although those features are not part of this new patent.
The new IP, registered by the US Patents and Trademark Office (USPTO) on November 26, 2024, does not specify whether the tablet's advanced new feature is motorized or not.
Nevertheless, it might show where the company might turn next for innovations once foldable displays are so commonplace they are used in mobile consoles.
