Expect 23 phones and 7 laptops with foldable displays next year, on top of the first rollable display phone. The laptops, in particular, will be released in limited batches as manufacturers expect a recession and tepid demand in 2023.

According to reputed display industry analyst Ross Young, head of the Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) research firm, there will be 30 bendy phones and laptops with foldable displays released in 2023. Besides 23 foldable phones and 7 laptops with displays that bend, we would also witness the launch of the first rollable display phone then. So far, most every major Android phone company, including Google, has been rumored to be working on a rollable display prototype or to have patented something related to the technology.

Only Oppo, however, has shown a working rollable display X phone prototype with automated stretching from a 6.7-inch to a 7.4-inch device via a so-called Roll Motor. While DSCC says it will reveal the name of the first rollable display phone maker at a later date, its report teaser says that it will be a Chinese company using a Korea-made flexible OLED panel.

As for the laptops, there will be no less than seven models with foldable displays released in 2023, which means that there could be new players in that game but the usual suspects Lenovo, ASUS, and HP. "Volumes will still be limited," warns the expert, and says they are decreasing the 2022 forecast for foldables on "sluggish market" grounds. Still, DSCC notes, there will be a 34% increase in foldable handset shipments in 2023 as just one Chinese phone company is expected to release no less than 4 models alone.

So far, laptops with flexible displays have seen models with varying form factors. We have the announced ASUS ZenBook Fold or the upcoming HP model that can go from 17-inchers into more compact 12-inch or even 11-inch footprints. On the other hand, the ThinkPad X1 Fold, which was the first laptop with bendy screen, unfurls into a 13-inch machine.

Its ThinkPad X1 Fold (2022) successor, however, sports a much larger, 16.3" screen, so there seems to be a form factor consensus among manufacturers now. With at least 7 laptop models with foldable screen technology on tap for a 2023 release, we could witness different screen sizes being introduced to gauge the market's perception for this fledgling form factor, too.
