Tecno Universal Tone is backed to bring AI-powered skin-tone accuracy to next-gen smartphone group selfies and portraits
Tecno's smartphones may not quite have the brand recognition of Google across all markets; nevertheless, the OEM asserts that it can give the Pixel camera feature of Real Tone a run for its money with its own proprietary AI for the same purpose.
Universal Tone is backed as a feature capable of "revolutionizing smartphone skin tone imaging technology" with its 3 individual engines. The Multi-Skin Tone Restoration Engine is touted to counter "historical bias" built up by truncated human skin representation in photography over time by incorporating a "newly-collected largest diversified spectral database" instead, thereby generating more precise algorithms based on an updated in-house skin tone scale.
The Local-Tuning Engine takes the tones detected in this manner and optimizes them for the conditions of the shot in question (lighting, scenery and color temperature included), while the AI-Powered Computational Portrait Engine is rated to take other factors such as "localized aesthetic and cultural preferences" and facial features into account.
Accordingly, Tecno asserts that Universal Tone is the best way to keep everyone in the picture in a way that highlights their unique skin tone and texture in the most optimal way. Then again, the OEM has yet to mention which of its often equally innovative smartphones will be first to support this new AI feature.
