Google asserts that its computational photo and video upgrades for the Pixel 8 series are as powerful as those of its camera hardware upgrades. The Redmond giant has unveiled new editing tweaks that work on the vanilla 8 as well as the 8 Pro such as Audio Magic Eraser; then again, the new Video Boost with Night Sight and new Pro mode are only available on the higher-end model.

Google insists that its Pixel smartphone cameras have been improved across the board, particularly the 8 Pro with its new main, ultra-wide and telephoto lenses. Nevertheless, the Redmond-based OEM is also adamant that the upgraded shooters are only as good as the AI behind them.

To that end, Google has augmented the 8 Pro's recording capabilities with Video Boost, a form of HDR+ by which the Tensor G3's power is leveraged to apply "computational photography models" to virtually every frame of the 4K clip in question to optimize their dynamic range.

Google strongly intimated that the technique allows the 8 Pro to beat the iPhone 15 Pro Max for clarity, detail and vibrancy in every scene - even in poorer lighting. In those conditions, Video Boost becomes Night Sight Video, touted to restore realistic color and luminosity to everything shot in the dark. The 8 Pro also comes with more Samsung- or Sony Xperia-like Pro Controls for granular adjustment to settings such as ISO and white balance on the fly.

The base-model Pixel 8 has not entirely left behind, with the latest updates to Google features such as Real Tone for supposedly accurate skin color reproduction. The vanilla 8 can also handle Audio Magic Eraser, another "complex editing" tool rated to isolate "distracting" noises such as a dog barking in the background and remove them from a given recording.

There are also new versions of Magic Editor in the Pixel 8-series' camera UI (by which individual objects in a frame can be moved around into more pleasing compositions), as well as a new Best Take feature that seeks to rival an iOS 17 counterpart by replacing a subject's entire facial expression with a better one from an existing reel in group shots.

Finally, Google has also developed a Guided Frame mode made up of non-visual cues (such as haptic feedback) so that those with vision impairments can still take photos. Finally, Zoom Enhance is rated to intelligently 'clean up' lines and details in images with poor magnification, although the Feature Drop containing this mode will not be available until after the 8 series is released.
