Google has brought fresh competition to the likes of the Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Arriving as the Pixel 8 Pro, the flagship contender builds on its predecessor with a brighter display, faster charging, a new Tensor chipset and optional 1 TB of storage.

The Pixel 8 Pro is now available to order, shortly after today's launch event. For reference, Google has also presented the Pixel 8 and Pixel Watch 2, while refreshing the Pixel Buds Pro too. As for the Pixel 8 Pro, Google has made various changes from its predecessor, not least a commitment to providing 7 years of software updates.

Additionally, this year's Pro is the first that can be ordered with 1 TB of storage. Unfortunately, this appears to be only true in North America. For example, European and UK variants top out at 512 GB, which only matches the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro. Nonetheless, Google has included a larger 5,050 mAh battery that supports 30 W charging, plus its Tensor G3 chipset with support for Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 7 connectivity.

Moreover, the Pixel 8 Pro peaks at 2,400 nits, up from 1,500 nits on last year. It is worth noting that this year's Pro has a lower resolution panel (2,992 x 1,344 pixels) than its predecessor, although this still results in a higher pixel density than the iPhone 15 Pro Max at 489 PPI and 460 PPI, respectively. Incidentally, Google has protected the 6.7-inch OLED display with Gorilla Glass Victus 2, details of which you can find on Corning's website.

On top of those changes, Google has also upgraded the 12 MP ultra-wide-angle camera in the Pixel 7 Pro to a 48 MP alternative with a 125.5° field of view, 0.8 μm pixel width and an f/1.95 aperture. Seemingly, the Pixel 8 Pro retains its predecessor's other camera sensors, albeit with tweaked aperture sizes and a slightly lower output resolution for its front-facing camera. The Pixel 8 Pro is available now in Bay, Obsidian and Porcelain colour options for the following prices, all with a complimentary Pixel Watch 2 for those who pre-order the handset:

  • 128 GB - US$999
  • 256 GB - US$1,059
  • 512 GB - US$1,179
  • 1 TB - US$1,399 (Obsidian exclusive)
