Google Pixel 8 arrives as more compact successor to Pixel 7 with 120 Hz display and larger battery capacity
Google has revealed several new products today, the Pixel 8 being one of them. As expected, the Pixel 8 is smaller than its predecessor, which measured 155.6 x 73.2 x 8.7 mm. In comparison, the Pixel 8 comes in at 150.5 x 70.8 x 8.9 mm, which also makes it slightly taller, narrower and thicker than the iPhone 15. Google has dropped the weight of its cheaper flagship by 10 g too. Thus, the Pixel 8 matches the iPhone 15 Pro in this regard at 187 g.
The Pixel 8 has a new screen as well, which Google markets as an 'Actua display'. Measuring 6.2-inches across, the OLED panel outputs natively at 1080p with 2,000 nits peak brightness and a 120 Hz refresh rate. For reference, the Pixel 8 is Google's first non-Pro smartphone to exceed 90 Hz. However, the Pixel 8 lacks the 1-120 Hz variable refresh rate of the Pixel 8 Pro, full details of which we have covered separately.

Moreover, the Pixel 8 features Google's new Tensor G3 chipset, as well as 8 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and a 4,575 mAh battery that can recharge at up to 27 W via its USB 3.2 Type-C port. Incidentally, Tensor G3 adds Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, upon which the entire iPhone 15 series misses out. The Pixel 8 shares its 50 MP primary and 10.5 MP front-facing cameras with the Pixel 8 Pro too, although it makes do with a lesser 12 MP ultra-wide-angle camera.
The Pixel 8 is already orderable in multiple markets, including Europe, the UK and the US. At launch, Google is offering the handset in Hazel, Obsidian and Rose colour options, all for US$699 with 128 GB of storage or US$759 if you need 256 GB of storage. As always, Google is also offering various promotional discounts, whether that be trade-in offers, US$200 off a Pixel Watch 2 or a free pair of Pixel Buds Pro.
