Steam Machine leads all games on Valve's top sellers, but high price helps mini PC

Valve’s mini gaming PC arrived to a mixed reception. Reviews question whether the Steam Machine price is too steep for its unspectacular performance. Regardless, the console alternative has debuted at No. 1 in the manufacturer's top sellers rankings. Its high cost helps propel the system above all other games sold on the marketplace.

A revenue machine

The SteamOS cube sits atop free-to-play titles that rely on in-game purchases like Marvel Rivals and Counter-Strike 2. Anything but free at $1049+, the Valve hardware benefits from how the rankings are calculated. Rather than units or copies sold, total revenue determines which products are most successful.

Despite a price increase, the Steam Deck handheld finds itself in 5th place, up one spot from the previous week. The improvement illustrates why some investors celebrated Switch 2 and PS5 consoles becoming less affordable. If costs are reasonable and demand is strong, manufacturers can earn more profits during the memory shortage.

Valve blames the same storage and memory shortage for the higher-than-expected Steam Machine price. The unknown is whether non-enthusiasts are willing to pay a premium. The top sellers chart doesn’t provide much insight into how many living rooms the mini PC will invade. Still, there are some encouraging signs for the Gabe Newell company.

How stretched are supplies?

The gaming giant was confident enough to introduce a reservation system. Buyers chose their desired configuration and entered a queue. Lucky fans have recently begun receiving email invitations to complete purchases. The fact that many are still waiting indicates either supplies are low or there are plenty of eager customers.

In Asian countries, with no similar process in place, the Steam Machine release date disappointed followers. The mini PC sold out almost instantly on the Valve-affiliated Komodo Station. Meanwhile, scalpers have been reselling the hardware for dramatically inflated prices.

It’s unclear what impact the middling in-game performance and reviews will have on longer-term sales. Even if buyers opt for cheaper alternatives, the compact console is likely to remain a fixture on the Steam top sellers list.
