Valve now admits that 4K/60 fps graphics are not always realistic with its new gaming system. After Steam Machine reviews exposed performance limitations, the company adjusted its marketing. The hardware’s high price makes 1080p/1440p visuals not as appealing compared to PS5 consoles.

When Valve announced its console alternative, the promise of 4K/60 fps performance drew skepticism. Newly published Steam Machine reviews show that its specs struggle with many AAA games at that setting. Perhaps in response to the criticism, the Gabe Newell company has revised its marketing for the mini PC.

Moving the goal posts?

On the store page for the system, Valve originally advertised “4K gaming at 60 fps.” Now, it reads “up to 4K gaming with FSR 4.1”, a small but significant revision.

The “up to” phrasing better reflects the Steam Machine performance described in reviews. Less demanding or older titles may run at 4K without frequent frame rate drops. Still, comparable to an entry-level gaming PC, 1080p-1440p is a more reasonable goal. PC users are generally less receptive to 30 fps graphics than console users. Dropping “60 fps” further lowers expectations.

Benchmarks have also illustrated the vital role of FSR on the Linux-based cube. Using AMD’s technology, the system can render compatible games at a lower native resolution before upscaling to 4K. It’s unclear whether FSR 4.1 will be ready in time for the hardware's release date, but it produces even cleaner images.

Valve still has a value problem

The marketing changes likely won’t quiet critics of the Steam Machine price or performance. Without a controller, the 512GB mode costs buyers $1049. For many hundreds of dollars less, the PS5 delivers similar or better frame rates in examples like Forza Horizon 5.

Even with some drawbacks, consoles are optimized for 4K TVs that populate living rooms. Yet, the value offered by the mini PC’s specs could soon seem more competitive. The memory shortage prompted Microsoft to raise the MSRP of its inventory again, with the Xbox Series X starting at $749. It may not be long before Sony follows with another price increase.

Unfortunately, Valve acknowledged that it was not well-positioned to stockpile RAM and storage. It decided against a dual-channel DDR5 configuration to procure more available 16GB modules. Reviews note that the move has a slight impact on Steam Machine performance, particularly with CPU-intensive titles.
