Samsung continues to drop hints about releasing its first tri-fold smartphone. In a new earnings call, the company suggested that it will be exploring 'new product segments' and will be 'strengthening the foldable lineup' in the second half of 2025 when asked directly about offering an alternative to the Huawei Mate XT.

Samsung could well have a few surprises in store for later this year. By all accounts, the company is preparing to release the Galaxy S25 Edge later this month. To that end, new leaks have revealed the launch date and detailed specs of Samsung's super slim flagship.

Meanwhile, the company has dropped more hints that fresh foldables are in the pipeline. For context, Samsung currently sells the Galaxy Z Flip6 and Galaxy Z Fold6 (curr. $1,244 on Amazon) globally, with the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition in South Korea as well as the W25 and W25 Flip in China. Ultimately, only the Galaxy Z Flip6Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition are distinct devices, though.

This year, there are rumours that Samsung has created not just the Galaxy Z Flip7 and Galaxy Z Fold7 but also the Galaxy Z Flip 'Fan Edition' (FE) and its first tri-fold called the Galaxy G Fold. Beaten to the punch by Huawei which now sells the Mate XT tri-fold globally, Samsung is rumoured to have spent longer developing its alternative to avoid a repeat of the negative press it received with the original Galaxy Fold in 2019.

Unsurprisingly, Samsung is remaining rather coy for now. With that being said, it has confirmed that its Mobile Experience (MX) business will 'strengthen its foldable lineup' in 'H2 2025' with 'new ecosystem products' and 'new product segments'. The full quote from Daniel Araujo, Corporate VP of the Planning Group in Samsung's MX team is as follows:

Well, we've continued to lead the foldable market through our innovation. And this year, with more innovation on the foldable form factor, we will improve the competitiveness of our products even further, enabling more customers to experience the benefits of foldables.

In terms of technological innovation, we're significantly improving the portability and performance, which are key buying factors for our customers. The advanced Galaxy AI experience from the S25 series will be tailored individually to each of the foldable form factors, fold and flip to deliver a more differentiated and specialized experience.

With the fold, we will offer and optimize large screen AI experience. And on the flip, it will feature a portable AI experience that can be used anywhere at any time. We'll expand sales of the high-end models while also strengthening the foldable lineup in order to attract new customers aiming for meaningful growth.

Now as for new form factors, we believe that beyond the form factor itself, it's essential to ensure a level of product quality and usability in real-world scenarios that's aligned with market demands and customer expectations. We are reviewing products with new form factors with a focus on securing a meaningful competitive advantage in performance and quality. Thank you.
