Samsung has been leading the way for years when it comes to Android desktop modes. While Motorola and Huawei have their own adaptions, Samsung DeX continues to offer the most polished experience on mid-range devices right up to current flagships like the Galaxy S25 Ultra (curr. $1,067.99 on Amazon).
Based on recent evidence, Google is preparing to release its long-awaited alternative too, albeit perhaps not in time for Android 16. Instead, it looks like Google may hold 'Desktop View' back for another major Android release. By contrast, it seems that Samsung is plotting an overhaul of its Android desktop mode this year.
Specifically, SamMobile has discovered various DeX changes within a One UI 8 beta build. As a result, some areas may change before Samsung finalises stable One UI 8 builds. Nonetheless, a few details can be observed at this stage.
For example, Samsung has centred all app icons on DeX's home screen, which gives the appearance of a secondary dock. The company has split out taskbar elements like connectivity options and the default clock, which are now segmented just as notifications previously were. Moreover, One UI 8 brings a smaller app drawer, a compact browser tab menu and improved Galaxy Buds, among other changes. As it stands, One UI 8 should debut on the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 this summer.
