Short-throw projectors are flat-panel alternatives that accommodate more home-theater setups. The new Optoma GT4000UHD 4K laser projector outputs giant images even when placed less than 12 inches from a wall. The GT4000UHD is now available at retailers with a $4,499 MSRP.

Despite large flat-panel TVs becoming less expensive, projectors can produce cinema-sized images. Optoma is releasing a versatile short-throw projector that requires less planning to install. Buyers can place the GT4000UHD less than a foot away from walls and pair it with screens larger than 100 inches. With a 4,000-lumen output, the 4K laser projector should soon arrive at retailers for $4,499.

The throw distance of the latest Optoma projector is minimal enough to set it on TV stands. Thanks to four-corner correction and keystone, owners have even more flexible placement options. Both options ensure that images remain perfect squares. Optoma also hopes the reasonably compact design won't attract too much attention. Unlike the powerful but bulky ZK810TST, the GT4000UHD weighs less than 10 lbs. and has a width and length of around 13 inches.

High brightness can ensure a projector thrives in more than dark home theaters. The Optoma 4K projector doesn't set new benchmarks with 4,000-lumen maximum brightness. Still, that's usually potent enough to handle some ambient light in rooms. The GT4000UHD also employs the familiar DLP technology. A 700,000:1 contrast ratio ensures black levels aren't overly compromised in daylight.

In gaming modes, Optoma promises that the GT4000UHD exhibits low input lag at 1080p with 120Hz and 240Hz refresh rates. However, that mark grows from as small as 4.3ms to 16.9ms when using 4K/120Hz settings. Still, the Optoma projector caters to competitive gamers who play at lower resolutions. While it lacks an HDMI 2.1 port, the projector has a pair of HDMI 2.0 connections for media players, PCs, and consoles.

As with other 4K laser projectors, Optoma's light cannon can withstand regular daily use. The manufacturer has equipped it with the DuraCore laser, which is rated for 30,000 hours in Eco-Mode.

The Optoma GT4000UHD aims to please regardless of room size or preferred content. Buyers can find complete specs for the 4K projector on Optoma's website.
