Samsung should be concerned: Its top Z-series smartphone falls short in eye-protection comparison
A key consideration for modern smartphones featuring OLED screens is the so-called PWM (pulse-width modulation) method, which is used to control screen brightness. This involves switching the individual pixels of the organic display on and off extremely quickly. The PWM dimming rate is important for sensitive users, as a frequency that is too low can lead to headaches and eye problems.
The measurements in our reviews of 2026 foldables show significant differences between manufacturers. Our latest review of the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra reveals that Samsung continues to rely on a PWM frequency of just 240 Hz to 480 Hz. Samsung’s premium foldable smartphone currently starts at around $2,000 (available at Amazon.com).
Samsung lags behind in PWM dimming comparison
Honor and Vivo are taking a different approach with their premium foldables. While the X Fold6 has a PWM dimming frequency of 1,920 Hz, the Magic V6 operates at a frequency as high as 4,320 Hz. We can confirm both values based on our test measurements.
Motorola uses DC dimming by default on the Razr Fold and automatically switches to PWM dimming below 30 percent of maximum brightness, albeit at a frequency of 720 Hz.
For those sensitive to OLED flicker, the Honor Magic V6 offers the most eye-friendly panel, followed by Vivo and Motorola. With the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Samsung has failed to keep pace with the technical advances made by its Chinese competitors. Compared with its predecessor, the foldable main display is slightly sharper and brighter, but there has been no progress in PWM performance.
