Searching for Flex Titanium: The ultimate Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 teardown

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 durability test generally received a thumbs-up from the tester, even though little has changed regarding some of the long-standing weaknesses of foldables, such as the easily scratchable plastic layer covering the flexible OLED panel. New this year is a titanium protective layer behind the AMOLED, which YouTuber Zack Nelson set out to investigate in his latest video.
In his teardown, he’s unable to remove the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s glued-in flexible display without damaging it—definitely not a job for an inexperienced DIYer. He was, however, able to prove that Samsung wasn’t lying and has indeed placed layers of titanium alloy beneath the display, even though they look significantly less spectacular in real life compared to Samsung's promotional videos.
After removing the cover display and back panel, Zack Nelson made its way to the new hinge, which probably should be referred to as hinges, as it consists of several modular parts. Along the way, we also see the relatively easy removal of the two batteries thanks to pull tabs. Despite the new silicon-carbon anode, they are still named lithium-ion batteries on the label. Above all, the teardown shows one thing: foldables are extremely complex designs. As soon as repairs go beyond replacing the top plastic layer, they very quickly become very expensive.
