This is the best book-style foldable
With the Galaxy Z Fold8, Samsung has launched a technically mature foldable that impresses with its wider format and premium build. Yet, as our test shows, the Xiaomi 18 Fold proves that the Korean manufacturer isn't leading the pack in every single discipline.
This becomes particularly clear with display brightness. While the Galaxy Z Fold8 achieves a peak HDR brightness of 3,358 cd/m² on its foldable OLED panel, we measure an impressive 3,759 cd/m² on the Xiaomi. Xiaomi also comes out on top with the outer display, reaching 3,735 cd/m² compared to Samsung's 3,163 cd/m². Both foldables deliver high color accuracy as well, though both also exhibit low-frequency display flicker.
The difference in battery life is even more pronounced. The Xiaomi 18 Fold packs a 6,000 mAh battery and lasts around 26 hours in our Wi-Fi test. Samsung has to make do with 4,800 mAh and 15 hours and 14 minutes. Under comparable testing conditions, this translates to an advantage of roughly 71 percent for Xiaomi. Xiaomi also scores points in the camera department: While Samsung omits a dedicated telephoto lens entirely, the Xiaomi 18 Fold offers a 3.5x optical zoom. Its 200 MP main camera also delivers detailed shots with good dynamic range.
On the other hand, Samsung shines when it comes to features. The Galaxy Z Fold8 weighs just 201 grams, making it 18 grams lighter. In addition, it offers 6 GHz Wi-Fi and eSIM support. Topped off with a seven-year update guarantee and official European availability, it holds clear advantages in usability.
Ultimately, the Xiaomi 18 Fold impressively demonstrates that Samsung is not the technical leader in every single category. However, for those who value comprehensive features, long-term software support, higher gaming performance, and uncompromised everyday usability, the Galaxy Z Fold8 (buy here at Amazon) still offers compelling arguments.
