Lenovo really stepped up its OLED game and now offers multiple series with excellent OLED screens. This is also the case for the new mainstream gaming laptop Legion 5 15, where the 165 Hz OLED offers superb image quality while gaming, especially in HDR with brightness values of more than 1,000 nits.

Lenovo was not really known for great image quality on their laptops in the past, but this year, the manufacturer improved the quality of their OLED screens and we have already reviewed a couple of multimedia laptops with the new generation of OLED screens. The maximum brightness in particular is very good and this is also the case for the new 15-inch gaming laptop Legion 5 15 we just reviewed.

The 15.1-inch OLED panel has a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels in combination with a refresh rate of 165 Hz. The subjective image quality is great and the rich colors also benefit from the glossy panel surface. We did not detect any issues with a grainy image on brighter surfaces, instead you can enjoy pure blacks, high contrast ratios, and extremely fast response times. The screen also convinces in terms of brightness with around 500 nits in SDR mode and more than 1,000 nits in HDR mode. This is a discipline where many rivals cannot keep up, and HDR games on the Legion 5 15 just look stunning. The only thing that's missing here is G-Sync.

You could already be very happy with these results on a gaming laptop that starts at $1300, but Lenovo also ships the device with the X-Rite Color Assistant software. It provides pre-calibrated color profiles for sRGB as well as P3 and the colors are very accurate in our analysis. This means the Legion can also handle picture and video editing with ease, which is why we would have liked to see a card reader. We detected PWM flickering, but it is DC-Dimming with a small amplitude in a wide range of brightness and flickering at more than 1 kHz for low brightness levels.

All in all, Lenovo offers one of the best screens in a gaming laptop that also beats many more expensive rivals. Please see our review of the new Legion 5 15 including our comprehensive display analysis for more information.
