This Lenovo Legion gaming laptop is a pretty good workhorse - with one exception
Some laptops are for work, some laptops are for gaming - that is how manufacturers market their devices. Of course, you can sometimes also use work laptops for gaming, and vice-versa. A laptop that can fill both roles can be a valuable asset.
We recently reviewed the Lenovo Legion 5 15AGP11. This 15.3 inch gaming laptop with AMD Ryzen CPUs and Nvidia GeForce RTX GPUs delivers great gaming performance, as it should for its primary usage. As a work laptop, performance is also much appreciated for many tasks.
Of course, a work laptop needs not just great performance, but also some other attributes - like quiet fans, a cool chassis and good battery life, for example. Or a low weight, so the laptop can be used in different locations. On these points, the Legion mostly delivers. 1.8 kg is still heavy, but certainly more manageable than other laptops at that screen size.
The Legion 5 15AGP11 also has other strong sides for a work device. These include the good keyboard, with a numpad that can be useful for number crunching, as well as plenty of ports. The Lenovo laptop is also upgradeable in many regards.
A great workhorse...but...
Unfortunately, there is one aspect that mires the experience for the Lenovo Legion 5 15AGP11 as a work device: The screen. The unit we tested included an OLED screen. On paper, this 500 cd/m², 100 percent DCI-P3 screen might seem like a good idea, especially if you work with colors.
Unfortunately, it is super glossy - so glossy that you can barely see the screen contents when you use the laptop in bright environments. This becomes even worse if you want to maximize battery life and use dark mode, as you mostly just see reflections.
For entertainment and gaming, a glossy screen is fine. But for work, it is less than ideal. To give the Legion laptop the edge as a great work device, Lenovo should have at least chosen a screen with an anti-reflective coating. As it is, the glossy screen makes this Lenovo laptop a device that is mostly just great for one use, and no for the other.
