The high-end phone from Vivo is perfect for photos of children or friends. Thanks to the special focal length of the main camera, portraits are more natural than with a Galaxy S25 Ultra or iPhone 16 Pro. But the Vivo phone also impresses beyond the camera.

The Vivo X200 Ultra is one of the best smartphones of the year – readers can find all the details in our detailed Notebookcheck review. Given the balanced sensor sizes, it's difficult to choose a proper "main camera" for the Chinese manufacturer's flagship phone.

For years, Vivo has used in-house solutions for the Image Signal Processor (ISP). Unlike the Vivo X200 Pro, which only uses an ISP, the Ultra model uses the Vivo V3+ chip in addition to the Vivo VS1 chip. While the V3+ processor is responsible for post-processing photos, the VS1 chip, as a "pre-ISP," is designed to ensure better processing of the image data. This is particularly beneficial for portrait shots.

The Android smartphone with the best portrait shots

The Vivo flagship delights photography enthusiasts with a 35mm lens featuring a 1/1.28-inch LYT-818 sensor and optical stabilization. Compared to flagship competitors such as the Apple iPhone 16 Pro or Oppo Find X8 Ultra, this focal length is rather unusual.

The difference between the 35mm lens of the Vivo X200 Ultra and a 23mm lens, like the one in the Galaxy S25 Ultra, is in the viewing angle. Furthermore, the focal length differences also affect distortion. The Vivo flagship is particularly suitable for portrait shots, as there is potentially less facial distortion than with the wider viewing angle of rival smartphones. Moreover, the 35mm lens of the Vivo X200 Ultra offers a more pleasant, natural field of view.

The shots taken with the Vivo X200 Ultra and a Galaxy S25 Ultra clearly show that the former is not only capable of natural portrait framing, but also produces more beautiful bokeh. This is a huge advantage, especially with difficult subjects like our kitten, as portrait mode with artificial background sharpness often fails to produce the desired results.

If the 35mm lens occasionally delivers a slightly too wide viewing angle compared to traditional 85mm portrait lenses, you can also use the telephoto lens on the Vivo X200 Ultra with the aforementioned 3.7x magnification.
