A new leak suggests that Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 could be using an advanced display tech that has not been used before on any current Samsung product. This is said to be the groundwork for Apple’s rumored iPhone Fold.

Apple is said to be working on its first foldable iPhone, unofficially referred to as the iPhone Fold. It is also said that Samsung will be supplying the display for the iPhone Fold. Now, a new leak suggests that the Korean smartphone maker has found a way to slim down the folding display to meet Apple’s standards, which is why the upcoming Fold 7 will be as thin as it is rumored to be.

The latest leak comes from ‘yeux1122’ over at Naver blog (machine translated from Korean to English) and it states that the folding display in Apple’s iPhone Fold has never been installed in any existing Samsung phone. It adds that the display meets Apple’s standards for thickness, power-to-weight ratio, brightness, etc. It was previously said that Apple refrained from releasing a foldable for this long because it wanted the crease to be as unnoticeable as possible and recent reports suggested that Samsung was able to achieve that. Now, it looks like Samsung has been able to deliver on other requirements as well.

Even though the leaker mentions this new display tech has not been implemented on any current Samsung product, they state that this is the reason why the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a significantly reduced thickness compared to the previous generation. This slimming down has been made possible thanks to the touch sensor being integrated into the display, rather than being a separate layer on top. This has reportedly reduced the thickness by 19%.

Furthermore, new processes and component improvements have led to better color reproduction, peak brightness, and typical brightness levels. These supposedly meet Apple’s standards for its first folding iPhone.

It was recently reported that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be the slimmest folding phone on the market, but there were some contradictory opinions on this. Techmaniacs claimed that the Z Fold 7 would be only 8.2 mm thick when closed, beating the Oppo Find N5 by 0.7 mm. On the other hand, known leaker Ice Universe shared that the Z Fold 7 will, in fact, match the thickness of the Find N5 at 8.9 mm when closed.
