Google has been releasing short videos as part of its ‘#BestPhonesForever’ ad campaign on its Made by Google YouTube channel. These videos typically involve a conversation between a Pixel and an iPhone. The latest video takes a jab at iPhone copying Pixel features years later, and referencing the upcoming iPhone 17 and its rumored redesign. The iPhone 17 series is said to feature a camera bar much like Pixel phones.
The short video has the title ‘Responding to the Rumors’ and shows a Pixel phone and an iPhone chatting in a podcast setup. The Pixel phone starts off by addressing rumors suggesting the iPhone 17 series redesign and how it is expected to feature a camera bar across the top of the phone, which has been a staple for Pixel phones for many generations. The iPhone then chimes in with “it’s crazy, can you imagine me, doing the same thing you did first, years later.”
The iPhone then goes on to bring up Night Mode, a feature that was added to the Pixel phones years ago as Night Sight. Similarly, there was Magic Eraser for Pixel phones and three years later, iPhone had Clean Up. Lastly, the iPhone mentions widgets, a feature that Android has had since its very first iteration.
The Pixel phone then emphasizes that the redesign rumors are just rumors, which is then immediately repeated by the iPhone, in the same cadence. The Pixel phone then goes, “Oh come on!” The short ad seems to be in good spirits and the commentors are responding the same way.
The era of smartphones is one of innovation and inspiration, so it’s pretty common for companies to implement features that their competitors have had. A lot of the smartphone industry tries to copy Apple in terms of design, hardware, and software features as well. This level of healthy competition is always good for the end user.
