Like in previous years, Apple is expected to launch a slew of new products in Fall 2025. We could see the new iPhone 17 series, a bunch of new accessories, including new Apple Watch models, and a new MacBook Pro before the 2025 ends. The new MacBook Pro could debut with the Apple M5 SoC.
Bloomberg has now claimed that, in addition to the M5, Apple is also working on a bunch of other SoCs, including a new AI server chip.
Apple M6, M7, and AI server chip
Per Bloomberg, Apple is working on the M6 “Komodo” and the M7 “Borneo” SoCs. If the company follows the same launch schedule as its previous SoCs, the Apple M6 and the M7 could land sometime in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
More interestingly, the report also claims that Cupertino is developing a new AI server chip codenamed “Baltra”. Apple’s new AI chip is reportedly being made in partnership with Broadcom and is set to be released in 2027. This new chip might boast a humongous core count, as Apple is seemingly testing configurations with 2x, 4x, and 6x the CPU and GPU cores of the M3 Ultra.
For reference, the Apple M3 Ultra boasts up to 32 CPU cores, 80 GPU cores, and a 32-core Neural Engine for AI tasks. Apple claims that the M3 Ultra is an impressive 1.5x faster than the M2 Ultra in the CPU department and 2x faster in the GPU department.
So, Apple’s new AI server chip might rock anywhere from 64 to 192 CPU cores and 160 to 480 GPU cores. These are pretty big numbers, so we’ll have to wait for more details before taking them at face value.
Finally, in addition to the M6, M7, and the “Baltra” AI server chip, Apple is allegedly developing an SoC, codenamed “Sotra”, for the Macs. There are no technical details about the SoC, nor do we know if this chip is for future desktop Macs or MacBooks. If we had to guess, a high-end desktop chip makes the most sense, as Apple’s current strategy of standard, Pro, and Max M-series SoCs serves the laptop market rather well.
