New battery tech has allowed smartphones to be slimmer but it looks like customers would rather have thicker phones with much larger batteries. These slim phones, at least most of them, come at the cost of now expectedly basic features.

With industry giants like Apple and Samsung soon releasing ultra-slim phones, it wouldn’t be a surprise if other brands followed suit. But do consumers actually want thin phones? Apparently not. A couple of polls run by a tech news publication show majority of people would rather have thicker phones with larger batteries and more features than thin and, arguably more fragile, devices.

The two polls were conducted by Android Authority, one on their website and the other on YouTube. Both showed the same result. A large majority of participants opted for thicker smartphones with more features or phones staying the same thickness, rather than ultra-slim ones with compromises. The poll on the website saw 1,431 voters with about 42% siding with thicker, 40% siding with them staying the same, and only 18% stating they would like slimmer smartphones and don’t mind the trade-offs.

As for the YouTube poll, the gap is even larger with only 10% wanting slimmer phones as opposed to 50% demanding thicker options with more battery and features. The remaining said they were fine with how phones are currently.

This comes at a time when Samsung is about to unveil its Galaxy S25 Edge that is expected to be just 5.8mm thick, but sport a smaller 3,900 mAh battery and only a dual-camera setup. Similarly, the rumored iPhone 17 Air is said to be just 5.5mm thick and come with major battery compromises, just one rear camera, and a single speaker.

This trend is not limited to standard bar type phones but foldables as well, where it actually does make more sense. The initial generations of foldables were bulky so slimming those down is a welcome trend. The Oppo Find N5 is just 8.93mm thick when folded but still sports a 5,600 mAh battery. The upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 is said to match that size but sport only a 4,400 mAh battery, same as the previous generation.
