Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 2024 review - The slim gaming laptop now with AMD Zen 5

Asus has now additionally brought out a version of its well-known ROG Zephyrus G16 featuring the new AMD Zen 5 mobile processors. However, there are only configurations available with conventional cooling systems, so the new Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 can be combined with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop at most. The more powerful RTX 4080 Laptop GPUs as well as the RTX 4090 Laptop in combination with a vapor chamber cooling unit continue to only be available with Intel's Meteor Lake chips. Currently, there are two variants to choose from that are fitted with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and 32 GB RAM. Our test device with the RTX 4060 Laptop retails for about US$2,800 and the version with the RTX 4070 Laptop costs just under US$3,000.
Apart from a new processor, this laptop only comes with minimal changes (for example its WLAN module), which is why we will be primarily focusing on performance and emissions in this article. All further information about the ROG Zephyrus G16 can be found in our detailed review of the device:

Differences compared to the Intel model
When it comes to its case design, there are no differences whatsoever compared to the Intel model of the ROG Zephyrus G16. You still have a choice between a dark-gray or white variant, whereby the darker version continues to be quite a fingerprint magnet. As already mentioned, the new AMD models can only be purchased with a conventional cooling system which consists of a total of three fans with regular heat pipes. Again, the two hidden screws and the glued-on rubber feet make it unnecessarily hard to access the laptop's components.
The WLAN module can be swapped out and the AMD model is equipped with a Wi-Fi 7 module from MediaTek, which is an advantage over the Intel models. Its transfer rates are very good and we had no signal quality problems during our test period. Its keyboard now features a dedicated Copilot key but apart from this, it is the same as on the previous models, still making it one of the most comfortable keyboards within the field of laptops.
In general, the new AMD G16 supports the advanced Copilot functions thanks to its faster NPU, which includes live subtitling, for example. Unfortunately, it doesn't currently support Studio Effects for its webcam, which doesn't make much sense seeing as how the old Intel models as well as the Zephyrus G14 with the AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS supported these. We have already been in touch with Asus and will update this article as soon as we have received an answer.

Performance - Zen 5 with 32 GB RAM
The new GA605 variants of the ROG Zephyrus G16 are equipped with the new Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and 32 GB RAM (LPDDR5x-7500) as standard, which is certainly an advancement over the old Meteor Lake models that could also be had with 16 GB RAM. However, the RAM is soldered on and there is no option to select 64 GB. This is reserved for the identically-built ProArt P16.

Processor - Ryzen AI 9 HX 370
We already took a closer look at the new AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 in our CPU analysis. It features 12 Zen 5 cores with a maximum clock speed of 5.1 GHz. Its performance was outstanding and in both the multi-core and single-core tests—it clearly outperformed its competitors, including the Core Ultra 9 185H. The ROG Zephyrus G16 with the Core Ultra 7 155H was more than 20 % slower in the multi-core tests. For even better performance, you would have to use the HX CPUs from Intel or AMD (e.g. Ryzen 9 7945HX). In addition, its performance remained extremely constant even under continuous load. In battery mode, its performance was constant at first, but from a battery level of 24 % or less, the processor was only allowed to consume 19 watts. Further CPU benchmarks are available in our tech section.

Storage device
The ROG Zephyrus G16 GA605 still comes with two fully-fledged M.2 2280 SSD slots. A 1-TB version of the Micron 2400 is installed in our test device, of which 860 GB is still available after first starting up the laptop. The SSD's transfer rates were only average overall, but at least its performance remained stable even under prolonged load. Further SSD benchmarks are available here.

Graphics card
The processor's integrated Radeon 890M takes care of simple graphics calculations and if things get more demanding (for example when gaming), then the dedicated Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop takes over. Advanced Optimus technology is used for switching between the two, but it always lags for a short moment when doing so. Thankfully, this is completely normal. The RTX 4060 Laptop can consume up to 100 watts, or 80 watts when using performance mode.
The benchmark results were about as expected and even in performance mode, this was the fastest RTX 4060 laptop within the comparison field. The Dell XPS 16 with the RTX 4070 Laptop (60-watt TGP) was only a small amount faster and its gap behind the ROG Zephyrus G16 with the RTX 4070 Laptop was a mere 13 % in the GPU benchmarks.
The combination of the RTX 4060 Laptop and the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 means the laptop does a great job when gaming, too—all of the games we tested ran smoothly in QHD resolution and with maximum details. If you would additionally like to make use of ray tracing, then you'll have to rely on upscaling technologies such as DLSS and/or Frame Generation if the game supports them.
When running our standard selection of games, the Zen 5 test device actually performed the same as the older G16 (Core Ultra 7 + RTX 4070 Laptop) and even when playing more modern games such as Cyberpunk 2077, its lead wasn't huge.
The GPU's performance remained stable under constant load as well as during longer gaming sessions. In battery mode, the RTX 4060 Laptop is only allowed to consume a maximum of 42 watts, which is why we noted a 28 % decrease in performance in this scenario. Further GPU benchmarks can be found here.

Emissions & power
Noise emissions
The laptop's cooling system still consists of a total of three fans and turns out to be the Zephyrus G16's weakest point. As with the Intel model, the small system fan is the biggest issue with its high speeds. If you aren't using quiet mode, the fans almost never stand still, which is pretty annoying. We are a bit surprised because Asus apparently wanted to correct this behavior in its GU605 with the help of a BIOS update, and even the identically-built ProArt P16 was configured much better. Their maximum noise emissions under load are comparable again, whereby the AMD model is slightly louder overall than the Intel model. We noted no other electronic noises coming from our test device.

Temperature
There were no surprises when it came to the laptop's surface temperatures. The case stayed nice and cool in idle mode and under low load, but we measured more than 50 °C in places under load. Even so, the area around the two fans in particular stayed very cool, which is why the WASD area of the keyboard also remains super cool when gaming. During the stress test, the processor stabilized at 30 watts and the graphics card at 65 watts after a few minutes.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 48.2 °C / 119 F, compared to the average of 40.5 °C / 105 F, ranging from 21.2 to 68.8 °C for the class Gaming.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 51.3 °C / 124 F, compared to the average of 43.3 °C / 110 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 27.1 °C / 81 F, compared to the device average of 33.9 °C / 93 F.
(±) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 37.9 °C / 100 F, compared to the average of 33.9 °C / 93 F for the class Gaming.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are reaching skin temperature as a maximum (34.2 °C / 93.6 F) and are therefore not hot.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.9 °C / 84 F (-5.3 °C / -9.6 F).

Power consumption
Overall, there were no real surprises in our consumption measurements, either, and the two ROG Zephyrus G16 models achieved very similar results due to their comparable TDP/TGP values. You can expect just under 130 watts when gaming. In the stress test, we initially measured just under 180 watts before this value leveled off at around 135 watts after a few minutes. The 200-watt power supply unit supplied is therefore perfectly adequate. Its standby consumption of 1.3 watts is slightly too high.

Runtimes
Its battery capacity is still 90 Wh, but the AMD version's runtimes are slightly better than the Intel model. In our WLAN test at 150 cd/m² and 60 Hz, we measured just under 8 hours (~7.5 hours at 240 Hz), which is 45 minutes longer than the GU605. At full screen brightness, however, its runtime was the same at 5:45 hours. The new GA605 also had a clear advantage in the video test at 150 cd/m², as we measured 13:44 hours compared to 11:11 hours.

Verdict - The G16 is better with Zen 5, but its fans are still its weakness
Thanks to the new AMD Zen 5 mobile processor, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 now offers considerably better CPU performance compared to the old Intel model with the Meteor Lake chip and it runs games pretty well indeed. Furthermore, its battery life has gotten a little better and all variants of the GA605 are equipped with 32 GB RAM as standard. There still isn't a 64 GB variant available—this is reserved for the ProArt P16.
On the other hand, the AMD models can be purchased with the GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop at best, and you'll have to go without the vapor chamber cooling and faster GPUs. This brings us to the AMD-G16's biggest weakness, namely its fans. The third system fan is particularly annoying during everyday use with its high rotation speeds and you are almost forced to use the quiet mode to ensure that the fans are switched off even when the laptop is idling. This surprised us, as Asus was supposed to rectify this issue on the G16 in the shape of a BIOS update and the ProArt P16, which is built identically, doesn't have to contend with this problem.
The new AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 offers lots more performance than the Meteor Lake processor and has also improved the laptop's runtimes. However, the Zephyrus G16 GA605's weakness continues to be its fan configuration with an annoying third system fan.
Price-wise, the situation becomes a little trickier. This is because Asus' asking price for the GU605 with a Core Ultra 9, 32 GB RAM and an RTX 4070 Laptop is just under US$3,000 and the variant with the RTX 4060 Laptop and 32 GB RAM can already be found online for around US$2,500. Even if the AMD version is better (and the problem with the fan will likely be solved quite soon via an update), the surcharge of around US$300 compared to the comparable Meteor Lake models is hard to justify.
Price and availability
The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 can currently be purchased via major online retailers such as Best Buy, where the model with an RTX 4070 and 32 GB RAM currently costs US$2,299.99.
