Asus' new ROG Zephyrus G16 features a completely new and considerably slimmer design, with a target market in mind that goes beyond just gamers. The resulting product is a high-quality 16-inch laptop with an impressive OLED panel and excellent speakers that can easily compete with Apple's MacBook Pro or the Razer Blade 16. Update: 240 Hz screen refresh rate battery life tests added

The Zephyrus G14 starts at $2,199, and the G16 starts at $2,299, though notably, these starting prices are for less powerful variants of the laptops than what I tested that sport 16GB of RAM and 4060 Laptop GPUs, among other differences. Depending on how intense you want to spec out the Zephyrus laptops, they can get as high as $4,499, though I’m not sure I’d recommend spending that much on a laptop. The main argument I see for both the G14 and G16 is that the laptops, pricey as they are, are effectively a two-for-one deal. You get a powerful laptop that’s capable for work and gaming. It’s a tempting offer, especially if you can’t splurge on both a solid portable laptop and a tricked-out gaming desktop.

If you're looking for a gaming laptop that doubles as a productivity powerhouse, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 is worth considering. It blends the performance of a gaming laptop with the aesthetics of a more traditional, professional device. This makes it ideal for those who need a machine for both serious work and gaming. However, keep in mind that its slim design leads to reduced performance under intense workloads and a shorter battery life. If you often work on the go and depend on long battery life, this could be a significant issue. But if you're mostly using your laptop at a desk near a power source, the benefits of the Zephyrus G16 might outweigh these drawbacks. I think if you value a laptop that offers strong performance, a great screen, and good connectivity, without the typical gaming laptop appearance, the Zephyrus G16 is worth considering.

This 2024 Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 series is a well-rounded update in the premium class of all-purpose portable notebooks. The premium craftsmanship, the excellent inputs, display, audio and ports, and the balanced performance in multitasking and demanding loads are among its main selling points, while on the other hand, potential buyers need to be aware of the power particularities and the toasty temperatures that are to be expected with sustained activities on this design.

Sleek, powerful and bursting with potential, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 has its hat in the running for one of the best gaming laptops page, provided its fancy new Intel Meteor Lake chip can live up to the hype performance-wise. The AI portion is definitely intriguing, but until I see something that will benefit gamers specifically, those are the benchmarks I’m going to live and die by. So far we’ve seen promising numbers, but the verdict’s out until we get our hands on a final production unit. The redesign is eye-catching and I love a svelte system that I can take with me on the road without fear of inducing back pain down the line that can still kick some ass. Because depending on the already battle-test Nvidia RTX 4000 series, the G16 is a bonafide ass kicker. I just hope the speakers and keyboard are better on the final model, but as it stands, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 holds plenty of promise.

Asus has just announced the new Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16 at CES 2024 — packing the latest CPUs from Intel and AMD, and refreshing the design with an all-aluminum body. Jason England goes hands-on to see how they improve upon the Editor's Choice award-winning previous generation.

Due to the lack of new GPUs from NVIDIA at CES 2024, ASUS could have refreshed the processors in its flagship gaming laptop line and simply called it a day. But much to my delight, ASUS still went and completely redesigned the ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16 and it feels like the company may have struck the perfect balance between performance and a more sophisticated take on the gamer aesthetic.

As CES 2024 ramps up, Asus kicked things off with a new line of ROG Zephyrus gaming laptops that, much to my surprise, are thin and light enough to allow for easy portability. I actually wrote this on the bigger of the two laptops, the Zephyrus G16, which Asus sent me ahead of the announcement to test out. Unfortunately, I can’t dig into performance and benchmarks yet (stay tuned for a full review in the coming weeks!), I can say it has me rethinking my staunch position on gaming laptops. From my first impressions after using the Zephyrus G16 for a little over a week, Asus managed to offer a reasonably thin-and-light laptop while still boasting significant performance and gaming capabilities. Plus, the simple design looks vague MacBook-ish, meaning it shouldn’t stand out like the typically garish designs we see on gaming laptops. The Zephyrus sports a CNC-machined aluminum chassis, which helps with the weight. It’s also quite sturdy, with virtually no flex.

Putting high-end gaming hardware into a thin, portable design will always demand some trade-offs. The fact that the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 runs hot, whooshes loud, and offers a mixed bag of performance and battery life is not surprising, just a bit disappointing. A lot of that is due to how well the Zephyrus line has traditionally navigated these challenges, but faced with competition from the likes of Alienware and Razer, the 16-inch Zephyrus merely holds its own. To be sure, there's still a lot to love about this machine, from the elegant chassis to the splendid OLED screen, but it's a capable gaming laptop that falls short of the elite. If you want a big-screen notebook that can play demanding games with buttery-smooth frame rates, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 is a worthy choice. But if you want the best, turn to either the more costly Razer Blade 16 or the more compact ROG Zephyrus G14, which does a better job of delivering gaming on the go.

The RTX 4080 in our evaluation unit supported boosting to about 115 watts (though the driver said 125 watts), with a typical power draw of 95 watts, and you get a substantial boost switching from the default (performance) to turbo mode -- around 10% to 20%, depending upon what you're doing. Turbo doesn't boost processor performance, though. The bottom can get really hot when it's plugged in, even in the default performance mode, a problem I find with all of the air-intake-on-the-bottom designs typical of these thin-but-relatively-powerful Core Ultra systems. It gets a little to hot to use on my lap while wearing shorts, and it seems to get really hot on the bottom when sitting on a big gaming mousepad; I suspect it doesn't sit up high enough for the airflow.

The ROG Zephyrus G16 was supposed to be the best 16" gaming laptop of 2024. That's what I had hoped because of the Zephyrus G16's battery life, claimed performance, size and weight. Especially when it comes to performance versus the Blade 16 from 2024. But this G16 review proves you can have all the specs in the world but still fail.

Asus only equips the most powerful models of the ROG Zephyrus G16 with vapor chamber cooling. We review the high-end model with the Core Ultra 9 185H and the GeForce RTX 4090 laptop. However, is the cooling really better than the type seen in the RTX 4070 and which compromises have had to be struck due to the compact case?

So how would I sum up my time with the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16? I really wanted to love it — I truly did. There is so much going for it, but the misstep of not unlocking the full horsepower potential of its beefy internals makes it a tough one to recommend. I believe that Asus is on the way to greatness here. It’s a beautiful laptop with far more attention paid to how you use this as an actual laptop, rather than just stuffing it with prime power and compromising the usability. But at some point, the decision was made to sacrifice some performance in favor of its aesthetics, and at these high prices, I feel the best of both worlds is more of a requirement than a “nice to have.”

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 starts at $2,899.99 in the US from Asus' website, but for the variant with an OLED 240Hz screen and Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU, you need to pay $3,499.99, at least. You can go as low as $2,000 from Best Buy for the entry-level trim with an Nvidia RTX 4070 graphics, but do keep in mind that this one also misses out on the vapor chamber cooling kit. Now, that's not a small amount, and for anyone who obsesses over small differences in benchmark numbers and bumps in FPS count, this one would come out as an expensive indulgence. But it's not an underwhelming machine by any stretch of the imagination. You get a beautiful piece of hardware that is plenty powerful to handle your 1440p gaming needs without crashing and burning. The OLED screen is amazing, battery life is not as abysmal as you would expect from an RGB-dripped thick gaming laptop, and the speakers are terrific, too.

Just like its smaller sibling, ASUS’ ROG Zephyrus G16 is an almost ideal thin-and-light gaming laptop. It’s got a sleek all-aluminum build, a gorgeous 240Hz OLED display and longer battery life. Granted, it might not be quite as powerful as some of its rivals thanks to lower-wattage components, but it’s still got enough oomph to handle practically anything you can throw at it. And thanks to a full-size SD card reader, it makes for an even better portable editing workstation. But most importantly, with a starting price of $1,750, the G16 is more approachable than many of its high-end (and bulkier) competitors, which makes it a great pick for people who want a larger system that won’t weigh them down.

There’s no denying the premium build quality and excellent craftsmanship of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16. It has a stunning OLED display and a good selection of ports, all of which are packaged nicely into a super slim and lightweight 16-inch chassis. It’s even more impressive if you consider that it comes with heavy-duty hardware like the Core Ultra 9 and an RTX 4090. Unfortunately, it does come with its own set of flaws. The laptop cannot compete with beefier alternatives in the market when it comes to performance; cheaper laptops with GPUs a tier lower outperform the max-Q RTX 4090 on the Zephyrus G16. The new Meteor-Lake processor also doesn’t seem to offer improved performance over its predecessors. Additionally, the laptop comes with 32 GB of RAM, which is plenty, but it’s soldered on, so there’s no way to increase it in the future.

We thought that the fans would be extremely noisy in “Turbo” mode but we were wrong. Of course, they are loud and audible but the noise isn’t too high or unbearable. However, the “Performance” preset is the sweet spot for gaming because the fans are much quieter in this mode. In “Silent”, the fans are turned off when the system is in an idle state or during very light usage. The 2.5K OLED panel (Samsung ATNA60DL01-0 (SDC41A3)) impresses with an infinite contrast ratio and a 240 Hz frequency. The display covers fully even the DCI-P3 gamut.

This 4090 Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 is rather peculiar proposition. On one hand, it's a premium design with excellent craftsmanship, a beautiful OLED display, punchy speakers, good inputs and plenty of IO. On the other, it is a more compact and lightweight 16-inch laptop than most of the other options available out there, and that means it doesn't match the performance of those beefier alternatives. Is this the right trade-off for you at around 3K USD?

If OLED screens are the latest gaming laptop battleground, then Asus has landed a powerful first strike. The ROG Zephyrus G16’s sensible panel resolution doesn’t demand the GPU work overtime like a 4K screen will, yet looks absolutely stunning in motion thanks to a 240Hz refresh rate. The new chassis is fantastically thin and light, with the sort of materials I’d expect from a MacBook Pro rival, rather than a gaming machine. I think the silver model’s keyboard and backlight combo could be more legible, but otherwise there’s very little worth griping over. The slash LED on the lid is especially easy on the eye, too.

The ROG Zephyrus G16 works both as a stylish gaming laptop and as a high-performance model for creators, matching strong ergonomics with stylish looks, good performance and an excellent screen. Even if the battery life is underwhelming, everything else from the audio to the keyboard is top-notch. Of course, all this goodness comes with a sky-high price tag, especially for the Core Ultra 9/RTX 4090 model. If you have £4000 to spend, other options are available, ranging from powerhouse creator laptops (the Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch M3 Max or the MSI Stealth 16 Studio) to mighty gaming monsters like the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D. Some come in at cheaper price points while boasting superior specs. But if you’re looking for a laptop where style, portability, ergonomics and performance all come together, it’s hard to dismiss the ROG Zephyrus G16. The price may put it beyond most people’s budgets, but it’s something of a dream machine.

The ASUS Zephyrus G16 is the thinnest and lightest 16 inch gaming laptop we’ve ever tested - but what compromises have been made to make it so portable? There’s at least one major issue you need to know about!

In summary, the new ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 2024 (GU605MI-QR064W) is a successful model. In my opinion, it’s a solid choice for those needing a high-performance laptop for both gaming and work tasks. Key positives include a stunning display, good performance, impressive sound, sleek design, compact size, and light weight. While the battery life might not be very long for a work laptop, it’s typical for gaming laptops to have 3-4 hours of battery life. Additionally, the laptop can be switched to eco mode if needed, which will reduce performance but significantly extend battery life. Another notable feature is that there are currently not many gaming laptops on the market with OLED displays. In all other aspects, I didn’t personally note any downsides, so I can confidently recommend the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 2024, including the GU605MI-QR064W model, or its more expensive variants. The only difference between them and the reviewed laptop is the internal components.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 is a good gaming laptop that is held back by a price that is just not competitive enough. I can easily point to a better product with greater performance metrics in its processor and graphics card for a few hundred dollars less. This doesn’t mean we wouldn’t recommend the Zephyrus G16, as those who want a colorful OLED panel and a gloriously thin gaming laptop will be pretty satisfied with what Asus offers here. But if you want to pay less for better power, we recommend the Lenovo Legion Pro 5i. Otherwise, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 is good if you’re willing to pay extra, and it’s especially worth it for players who need a lightweight gaming laptop to take on the go.

The new ROG Zephyrus G16 is definitely one of the best laptops of 2024. It impresses with its sleek design and versatile performance which is suitable for gaming and professional tasks alike. ASUS gets full marks for the redesign as it significantly amps up the appearance and overall build quality. The 16-inch OLED display stands out as it is not only super responsive but it also offers vibrant colours, high contrast, and accurate colour reproduction. This ensures that gaming visuals are stunning, while it also caters to design and creative work requirements. Other notable features are the speaker setup, the full HD camera, and an optimised keyboard and touchpad layout that maximises usability. Due to the thin design of the laptop, peak performance is limited, thus I would recommend going for a slightly lower configuration with an RTX 4080 or 4070.

The ROG Zephyrus G16 is a thin and relatively light gaming laptop that can be used to work comfortably and occasionally play modern games. In fact, it is an image model designed for a wider audience than just avid gamers. This sounds rather strange in the context of the Republic of Gamers line, but ASUS has been working towards this for the past few years, looking for a balance between design and performance. The Zephyrus G16 is fully in line with this idea, but time will tell whether users will like this approach.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 is a solidly built laptop that offers blazing fast gaming performance, a stunning OLED display, and a comfortable keyboard. While it’s on the more expensive end, we feel it’s worth every penny.

If you’re after raw performance, the Zephyrus G16 isn’t for you. Smaller laptops that are still portable can post higher results, and you may have to make a few compromises in games to get smooth frame rates at native resolution. This is a gaming laptop, but it has an asterisk. For the way I use a gaming laptop, which is as a portable companion to a desktop, the Zephyrus G16 fills a perfect void. It’s highly portable and just powerful enough to play games without major drawbacks. The price isn’t bad, either, at least considering the specs and build quality on offer here. If you already have a desktop or some other primary platform for playing games, the Zephyrus G16 is a great buy. As a primary gaming platform, there are better options. The aforementioned Lenovo Legion Pro 5 is thicker, but it’s also cheaper and faster. On the other end, Asus’ own Zephyrus G14 provides similar performance for around the same price, but it’s far more portable.

Today’s best laptops blur the line between gaming rigs and professional workstations. Leaders like the Razer Blade 16 and Dell XPS 16 handle 3D modeling, video editing, and AAA games with equal vigor. That versatility often comes with a high price, but the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 offers a more affordable alternative. It in some way even exceeds these competitors—it’s thinner and lighter—yet the model we tested retails for just $2,000. That’s $1,000 less than a Blade 16 or XPS 16 with roughly similar hardware. Keeping the price obtainable forces Asus to rely on a less attractive chassis, and the laptop’s battery life is just okay. But these are minor downsides easily excused by the G16’s value. Buying the G16 is probably the smart move. A Blade 16 is more attractive and built like a tank, but is that really worth the extra cash? We’re not so sure. And the G16 still gets far more right than wrong.

The new design of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 certainly provides an air of elegance and with the ROG Nebula Display, it’s as good a laptop for the creator and professional lot, just as it is for gaming. Still on the display, 240Hz is definitely a lot for this sort of monitor, given most games that you’ll be playing won’t be going past the 120 fps mark, especially at this unit’s display resolution, and with the hardware inside it. And while not as long as some other gaming laptops, the fact that this 16-inch gaming laptop can go for seven hours before crying out for a wall socket is nothing to sneeze at. Seriously, I think this year’s G16 is a nice balance between performance and endurance. If you’re looking for gaming laptops more powerful than this, though, I would recommend that you cast your gaze over to machines like ASUS’ Scar 18 or MSI’s Titan 18.

Asus now also offers its ROG Zephyrus G16 gaming/multimedia hybrids with the new Zen 5 processors from AMD. The AMD-based ROG Zephyrus G16 is a pricey gaming system for hard-core players or media professionals, but it checks most boxes. Our configuration delivers fast processing, steady gaming performance, long battery life, a dazzling display, and a luxury build. The RTX 4070 GPU and AMD processor may be the sweet spot for power, battery life, and price, depending on your needs, but the gaming frame rates do disappoint for the price. Not all games are as demanding as our test titles, nor do you need to run them all at the highest settings, but you should expect to be able to run games at or near peak visual fidelity when paying this much for a laptop, and the G16 can't quite get you there.

Comparing the Zephyrus G16 to similarly specced laptops would be an injustice since the G16 is designed for a different purpose. It’s not too thick and heavy but instead promotes portability. The laptop comes with plenty of power and has selective hardware perfect for most creators. While gamers definitely have other better options on the market, that also cost a lot cheaper, the G16 is a solid recommendation for content creators looking for a Windows alternative to the MacBook Pro. As for AMD vs Intel, the AMD variant is better if you want a creator’s laptop with good graphical prowess.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 thin and light gaming laptop is back, this time with the new AMD Zen 5 processor platform inside. The design is the same as the Intel version with a premium aluminum chassis, and it has a 2.5K OLED 240Hz display, WiFi 7, single zone RGB keyboard and your choice of an NVIDIA RTX 4060 or 4070 GPU.

This Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 GA605W series is an excellent portable performance laptop. The premium design, excellent inputs and OLED display and audio, and the capable hardware that allows plenty of performance in anything you might throw at it are among the strong points of this series. But it's not without some quirky particularities, and is also quite expensive, especially in this version with the RTX 4060 and 32 GB of RAM.

The latest version of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 is the AMD NPU refresh, added to give gamers more options. Otherwise, it's mostly standard and doesn't introduce much else. However, if you're interested in how well an AI processor will run and you want a more portable gaming laptop, then this might be a good investment.

Thinner and lighter than it looks, the ROG Zephyrus G16 packs some serious hardware in a stylish 16-inch frame. While there are multiple configurations available, the G16 that was sent to me for this review features an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H CPU paired up with a Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 that can boost up to 100W. Sadly the 16GB of LPDDR5X 7467MHz RAM is soldered in and not upgradeable, and 32GB is only available on the Ultra 9 with RTX 4070/4080/4090 configuration for a significantly higher price. The 16-inch IPS screen has a 16:10 ratio, with a 2.5K (2560 x 1600) resolution, up to 500 nit brightness, a 3ms response time and a 240Hz G-Sync compatible refresh rate. You also get a 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD, Wi-Fi 6 and a large 90Wh battery.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16, powered by the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, is a standout choice for both gamers and creators. What’s really impressive is how the processor combines speed with efficiency, effortlessly handling gaming and multitasking without draining the battery or slowing down. Asus has really hit the mark with this one, and has created a laptop that’s not just about raw power, but about how easy and enjoyable it is to actually use day-to-day, and how good it looks. For creators, the G16 offers just the right balance of performance and hardware, making it a solid choice for anyone looking for a reliable machine without overpaying for features they won’t use.

In summary, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 2024 series can be considered a solid line of premium laptops. They are well-suited for both gaming and work. The design is stylish and high-end, with excellent build quality, a stunning OLED display and sound, strong performance, and decent battery life. As for the GA605WI-QR107X model specifically, it’s a well-executed device. However, to be honest, the price could be a bit more reasonable. The key question is: which laptop is the better choice — the new AMD model or the previous Intel version with the same 4070 GPU? Let’s think this through. If your budget isn’t a concern and you’re looking for a more powerful laptop with a newer processor, then the GA605WI-QR107X is your best option.

Asus succeeds in delivering a great machine for gamers who don’t want their laptops to live on their desk, as well as content creators. The color-accurate, high refresh rate screen looks fantastic displaying any type of content, the speakers are just about the best you can find on a Windows laptop, and the port selection, especially the full-sized SD card reader, is good enough for photographers and video editors, though the lack of an ethernet jack is conspicuous. The price remains the biggest sticking point for either model of the G16. I’ve seen the Intel version on sale for as low as $1,400, which undercuts less expensive, chunkier competitors with similar specs like the Alienware m16 R2 or the Lenovo Legion Pro 5i and even Asus’ own ProArt line aimed squarely at artists.

I’m just going to come out and say it. The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 is one of my two favorite laptops of 2024. It sits right at the top next to the Surface 7 Laptop and I really cannot choose one or the other. I highly recommend this laptop for both content creators and gamers. For normal users, this might be a bit too much power and a bit pricey. But there are other ASUS options like the S16 or S14 for those who want to save some money and do not need this much power.

As a portable all-purpose laptop, this Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 series remains one of the most interesting options in its class, with the premium design, excellent inputs and OLED display and audio, and the capable hardware that allows plenty of performance in anything you might throw at it. In fact, this is even more powerful now in this refresh with AMD Strix Point hardware and extra RAM. But it's a rather tough sell at current prices, especially compared to the discounted Intel G16 variants.

In my opinion, this year's ROG Zephyrus G16 is perhaps the best offer for those users who need to combine performance and portability in one laptop. The manufacturer has managed to combine excellent components into one really beautiful and comfortable device, provide a good level of performance, and still leave room for a certain amount of autonomy (as far as it can be said about a gaming model). However, as is always the case in such cases, the price of such a laptop is far from affordable. Yes, simpler configurations can significantly reduce the price tag, but performance will have to be sacrificed. And no one wants to do that.

If you need a new thin and powerful laptop, the ROG Zephyrus G16 GA605 could be on your shortlist. It’s a well-built solid metal device with a great keyboard and touchpad. The other feature that could catch the buyer’s attention is the optional color-accurate OLED display (ATNA60DL04-0 (SDC41AE)). The 240Hz screen with HDR capabilities covers fully the sRGB and the DCI-P3 gamuts. It’s not a PWM-free unit but its pulsations have a high frequency of 961Hz which makes the screen comfortable for work. Actually, the writer of this review didn’t experience any kind of eye strain or headaches after a day of usage. Still, you can find an OLED Flicker-Free Dimming slider in the Aromory Crate app that could be useful for more sensitive users.

Asus threw an impressive piece of tech on my lap. There’s little I don’t adore about the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16. Yes, the keyboard needs work, but the rest of it is great, from the performance and design to the display and speakers. Not to mention that workday-long battery life. However, I cannot recommend buying it at its asking price. If you need something right this second, then try the Lenovo Legion 7i Gen 9 for $1,849 at Best Buy. It offers stronger overall performance, a brighter display, and a much more comfortable keyboard and touchpad. Otherwise, I would wait until the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 goes on sale. Long battery life and strong speakers are more rare than you might think.
