Reviews for the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 GU605MY
Asus only equips the most powerful models of the ROG Zephyrus G16 with vapor chamber cooling. We review the high-end model with the Core Ultra 9 185H and the GeForce RTX 4090 laptop. However, is the cooling really better than the type seen in the RTX 4070 and which compromises have had to be struck due to the compact case?

So how would I sum up my time with the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16? I really wanted to love it — I truly did. There is so much going for it, but the misstep of not unlocking the full horsepower potential of its beefy internals makes it a tough one to recommend. I believe that Asus is on the way to greatness here. It’s a beautiful laptop with far more attention paid to how you use this as an actual laptop, rather than just stuffing it with prime power and compromising the usability. But at some point, the decision was made to sacrifice some performance in favor of its aesthetics, and at these high prices, I feel the best of both worlds is more of a requirement than a “nice to have.”

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 starts at $2,899.99 in the US from Asus' website, but for the variant with an OLED 240Hz screen and Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU, you need to pay $3,499.99, at least. You can go as low as $2,000 from Best Buy for the entry-level trim with an Nvidia RTX 4070 graphics, but do keep in mind that this one also misses out on the vapor chamber cooling kit. Now, that's not a small amount, and for anyone who obsesses over small differences in benchmark numbers and bumps in FPS count, this one would come out as an expensive indulgence. But it's not an underwhelming machine by any stretch of the imagination. You get a beautiful piece of hardware that is plenty powerful to handle your 1440p gaming needs without crashing and burning. The OLED screen is amazing, battery life is not as abysmal as you would expect from an RGB-dripped thick gaming laptop, and the speakers are terrific, too.

Just like its smaller sibling, ASUS’ ROG Zephyrus G16 is an almost ideal thin-and-light gaming laptop. It’s got a sleek all-aluminum build, a gorgeous 240Hz OLED display and longer battery life. Granted, it might not be quite as powerful as some of its rivals thanks to lower-wattage components, but it’s still got enough oomph to handle practically anything you can throw at it. And thanks to a full-size SD card reader, it makes for an even better portable editing workstation. But most importantly, with a starting price of $1,750, the G16 is more approachable than many of its high-end (and bulkier) competitors, which makes it a great pick for people who want a larger system that won’t weigh them down.

There’s no denying the premium build quality and excellent craftsmanship of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16. It has a stunning OLED display and a good selection of ports, all of which are packaged nicely into a super slim and lightweight 16-inch chassis. It’s even more impressive if you consider that it comes with heavy-duty hardware like the Core Ultra 9 and an RTX 4090. Unfortunately, it does come with its own set of flaws. The laptop cannot compete with beefier alternatives in the market when it comes to performance; cheaper laptops with GPUs a tier lower outperform the max-Q RTX 4090 on the Zephyrus G16. The new Meteor-Lake processor also doesn’t seem to offer improved performance over its predecessors. Additionally, the laptop comes with 32 GB of RAM, which is plenty, but it’s soldered on, so there’s no way to increase it in the future.

Capable thin and light laptop, is that possible? Sure, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 GU605 proves that a compact sleek-looking machine can be suitable for gaming. We thought that the fans would be extremely noisy in “Turbo” mode but we were wrong. Of course, they are loud and audible but the noise isn’t too high or unbearable. However, the “Performance” preset is the sweet spot for gaming because the fans are much quieter in this mode. In “Silent”, the fans are turned off when the system is in an idle state or during very light usage. The 2.5K OLED panel (Samsung ATNA60DL01-0 (SDC41A3)) impresses with an infinite contrast ratio and a 240 Hz frequency. The display covers fully even the DCI-P3 gamut.

This 4090 Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 is rather peculiar proposition. On one hand, it's a premium design with excellent craftsmanship, a beautiful OLED display, punchy speakers, good inputs and plenty of IO. On the other, it is a more compact and lightweight 16-inch laptop than most of the other options available out there, and that means it doesn't match the performance of those beefier alternatives. Is this the right trade-off for you at around 3K USD?

If OLED screens are the latest gaming laptop battleground, then Asus has landed a powerful first strike. The ROG Zephyrus G16’s sensible panel resolution doesn’t demand the GPU work overtime like a 4K screen will, yet looks absolutely stunning in motion thanks to a 240Hz refresh rate. The new chassis is fantastically thin and light, with the sort of materials I’d expect from a MacBook Pro rival, rather than a gaming machine. I think the silver model’s keyboard and backlight combo could be more legible, but otherwise there’s very little worth griping over. The slash LED on the lid is especially easy on the eye, too.

The ROG Zephyrus G16 works both as a stylish gaming laptop and as a high-performance model for creators, matching strong ergonomics with stylish looks, good performance and an excellent screen. Even if the battery life is underwhelming, everything else from the audio to the keyboard is top-notch. Of course, all this goodness comes with a sky-high price tag, especially for the Core Ultra 9/RTX 4090 model. If you have £4000 to spend, other options are available, ranging from powerhouse creator laptops (the Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch M3 Max or the MSI Stealth 16 Studio) to mighty gaming monsters like the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D. Some come in at cheaper price points while boasting superior specs. But if you’re looking for a laptop where style, portability, ergonomics and performance all come together, it’s hard to dismiss the ROG Zephyrus G16. The price may put it beyond most people’s budgets, but it’s something of a dream machine.

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
