Lenovo Yoga 7 14 G7 review: Multimedia convertible shines with AMD Ryzen 7 6800U

Ryzen, OLED & USB 4. With the new Yoga 7, Lenovo offers an very exciting 14-inch convertible that uses the latest AMD Ryzen 7 6800U. Performance values are very good, but is the rest of the device also up to scratch? Is the Yoga 7 perhaps even better than the Yoga 9i?

We recently reviewed Lenovo's latest flagship convertible, the Yoga 9i 14. The subject of this review, the Yoga 7 14, is one step below in the product hierarchy, but is no less interesting because it uses a relatively new AMD processor. We have only been able to test the Ryzen 7 6800U in Asus' Zenbook S 13 so far, which is why we are very curious to see how it will perform in this 14-inch convertible.

Our sample device, a Yoga 7 14 G7 with the model number 82QF0018GE for an RRP of 1,499€ (~US$1500), is equipped with the aforementioned Ryzen 7 6800U, an integrated 680M-GPU, 16 GB of RAM, a 1 TB SSD and a 90 Hz OLED panel.

Case - Yoga 7 with aluminum case

The dark gray Yoga 7 14 is similar to the more expensive Yoga 9i in terms of design and also makes use of rounded corners. The display lid is also slightly smaller than the base unit, which is especially noticeable when the screen is turned down and the convertible is used as a tablet. The Yoga 9i, however, has a somewhat more premium look thanks to the use of polished metal along the base unit. But the Yoga 7 does not have to be shy at all with its aluminum unibody case: our review sample leaves a very high-quality impression in terms of stability and haptics. Neither the base unit nor the display lid can be dented and there are no creaking noises.

Instead of the central hinge of the Yoga 9i (which also includes the speakers), two hinges are used here that are very well adjusted and effectively prevent the display from teetering. One-handed opening is possible, but not so easy. The Yoga 7 14 is also optionally available in a light blue (Stone Blue). Fingerprints are not such a big problem, at least not in our version.

At a weight of around 1.4 kg, the Yoga 7 14 is one of the front runners among the convertibles, but the more expensive Yoga 9i is even thinner. The included 65-watt power adapter is the familiar Lenovo USB-C adapter at a weight of 338 grams.

Equipment - AMD convertible with USB 4

Nothing is sacrificed in terms of important connectivity standards: Alongside the USB-C and USB-A ports, there is a card reader and a full-fledged HDMI output. The front USB-C port in particular is a highlight because it supports the modern USB 4.0 standard. In addition to the internal display, the iGPU can also power three additional monitors.

SD Card Reader

The Yoga 7 14 offers a microSD reader on the left side that uses a spring mechanism. The card sticks out slightly when inserted, but this also makes removal much easier. In terms of speed, the card reader is average, as we measured just over 90 MB/s at peak with our Angelbird AV Pro V60 reference card and just under 80 MB/s when copying image files.

Communication

Lenovo deploys a Wi-Fi module from MediaTek (RZ616, 2x2), which also supports Bluetooth 5.2 in addition to the current Wi-Fi 6E standard. However, we were unable to connect to the 6 GHz network of our reference router from Asus. The transfer rates of almost 1.7 GBit/s in the 5 GHz network are excellent and very stable. No problems with range or distance were registered during testing.

Webcam

Above the display is an IR camera as well as a 1080p webcam, including a mechanical shutter, but this proves a little difficult to use. The camera's quality is an improvement over the previous 720p modules and you can also see an improvement in video conferencing.

Maintenance

The baseplate is secured with several Torx screws (T5) and can be removed easily. Lenovo installs a compact M.2-2230 SSD with an adapter ex-factory, but a regular M.2-2280 SSD would also fit here. The WLAN module is located under an additional cover and is half-covered with tape, but can be replaced. Otherwise, users are limited to cleaning the fan.

Keyboard

The dark gray chiclet keyboard offers an average typing experience. The stroke is very shallow, but the feedback is precise and the keyboard rather quiet. Qualitatively, however, other laptops offer better in terms of input features and we also subjectively liked the keyboard of the more expensive Yoga 9 14 a bit better. The white keyboard illumination offers two intensity levels, but cannot be activated automatically via a sensor. There is no fingerprint scanner either.

Touchpad & Touchscreen

The Yoga 7 14 comes with an active stylus

The large ClickPad leaves a somewhat mixed impression. The size of 12 x 7.5 cm is large enough for gestures of up to four fingers and there are no issues with basic functionality, but like many other clickpads, the click noises just seem too loud and cheap, which simply does not fit in with the otherwise high-quality impression of the laptop. We recommend using the pad only for tapping inputs.

The Active Pen is also included and is battery-powered. It supports 4096 pressure levels and functioned satisfactorily under testing, but unfortunately cannot be stored in the case or attached to the case magnetically.

The capacitive touchscreen works flawlessly.

Viewing angle stability
Viewing angle stability

The Yoga 7 14 is equipped with a 2.8K OLED display that offers a resolution of 2880x1800 pixels in a 16:10 format. We have already encountered the panel (LEN140WQ+) in other Lenovo laptops such as the IdeaPad Slim 7i Pro. The special feature here is the higher frequency of 90 Hz, but this needs to be manually activated in the settings first. Image quality, especially during movements and media playback, is much smoother compared to conventional 60 Hz panels. In general, the subjective picture impression is very good.

In terms of brightness, we recorded values that are currently typical values for OLEDs, i.e. a maximum brightness of just below 400 cd/m² in normal SDR mode. Only in HDR mode, which also has to be activated manually (as is typical for Windows), the brightness then increases to up to 592 cd/m² in certain bright areas and even reaches 560 cd/m² when the picture is almost completely white. Since the black value is 0 in OLEDs, the contrast ratio is extremely high and there are no halos (as should be the case with OLED panel technology). However, PWM flickering with a frequency of 360 Hz is present at a brightness of 80% and less, which can be limiting under certain circumstances. Viewing angle stability is very good. Only from certain angles can a slight blue cast be seen, which is normal for OLED panels.

The analysis with the professional CalMAN software (X-Rite i1 Pro 2) reveals a minimal color cast that is not visible to the naked eye. However, the color temperature is a somewhat too warm and there are also several outliers in the factory colors that are above the deviation mark of 3. We were able to improve the display via calibration (the corresponding profile is available for free download above). Together with the complete coverage of the P3 color space, the Yoga 7 14 is thus quite suitable for video/image editing.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.
       Response Time Black to White
1 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 0.5 ms rise
↘ 0.5 ms fall
The screen shows very fast response rates in our tests and should be very well suited for fast-paced gaming.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 1 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is better than the average of all tested devices (21.5 ms).
Response Time 50% Grey to 80% Grey
1 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 0.5 ms rise
↘ 0.5 ms fall
The screen shows very fast response rates in our tests and should be very well suited for fast-paced gaming.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.2 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 1 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is better than the average of all tested devices (33.7 ms).

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM detected 360 Hz ≤ 80 % brightness setting

The display backlight flickers at 360 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 80 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting.

The frequency of 360 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17900 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

The touchscreen reflects very strongly and there are big problems with reflections outdoors. Users have to consider and find a suitable position to be able to work reasonably.

Performance - AMD Ryzen 7 and PCIe 4.0

Our sample device is equipped with a relatively new AMD mobile processor, but Lenovo also offers the device with an Intel Core i7-1260P for the same price.

Testing Conditions

Lenovo offers the usual power settings: Battery Saver, Smart Cooling and Performance, which can be selected either via the preinstalled Vantage app or the Fn+P key combination. In the table below, we have listed the TDP limits of the different modes.

Power setting Power consumption Maximum fan noise
Performance 45 -> 25 Watt 42,8 dB(A)
Intelligent Cooling 32 -> 20 Watt 37,2 dB(A)
Battery Saver 20 -> 12 Watt 31,2 dB(A)

We selected Performance mode for the following measurements and benchmarks. The effects of other modes will also be examined in other sections of this review. The simple switching of power modes allows users to quickly select a weaker mode in order to benefit from the quieter fan, for example.

Processor - AMD Ryzen 7 6800U

This was only the second time that we were able to test the AMD Ryzen 7 6800U, AMD's latest mobile processor with 8 Zen3+ cores (Rembrandt-U) that can process a maximum of 16 threads simultaneously. The maximum core clock runs up to 4.7 GHz - more technical details are listed here.

In particular, the multi-core performance of the Ryzen 7 6800U is outstanding and the CPU is far ahead of the current Intel chips, which also require more power.

CPU data - Cinebench R15 multi-loop (Red: Performance, Blue: Intelligent Cooling, Green: Sleep).

Our Cinebench loop shows that the processor levels off after a few minutes at a power consumption of 25 watts few minutes and the multi-core performance is then about 16% lower compared to the first run. Nevertheless, the Yoga 7 is faster than the Yoga 9i with the Core i7-1260P. You just have to look at the power consumption here, since the Intel processor consumes up to 64 watts before stabilizing at 38 watts, but is still slower than the Ryzen 7 6800U at 25 watts. This makes abundantly clear as to who currently offers the more efficient mobile processor.

Intel has the lead in single-core performance, but this comes at the cost of high power consumption. All in all, the AMD processor is the better choice, and we are yet to factor in the better GPU performance. CPU performance is not reduced in battery mode. More CPU benchmarks are available in our tech section.

System Performance

The results in the synthetic benchmarks are excellent. Subjectively, the system performance leaves no room for criticism. The device is extremely responsive and there are no lags or jerks in everyday use. However, it is fair to say that this is also true of almost all current devices in this price range.

Storage Devices

The compact M.2-2230 SSD
The compact M.2-2230 SSD

The Yoga 7 14 supports PCIe 4.0 SSDs and the Kioxia drive also supports the same fast standards, but the drive only manages to achieve transfer rates of just over 3 GB/s. So more would have been possible here, but there are no major limitations and performance remains quite stable even under sustained load. In practice, however, users benefit from the large storage capacity (1 TB), with 905 GB available after starting up for the first time. This is a short M.2-2230 SSD, but it is installed with a bracket in the 2280 slot, so a normal 2280 SSD can also be installed here without issue if required. More SSD benchmarks can be found here.

GPU-Z AMD Radeon 680M
GPU-Z AMD Radeon 680M

The Radeon 680M is a powerful integrated graphics card that is well ahead of Intel's Iris Xe Graphics G7 (around 40-50 percent on average) and can compete with entry-level GPUs like the GeForce MX450 or Intel's new Arc A350M, especially in gaming benchmarks. Thanks to the video decoder, playing high-resolution videos poses no issue whatsoever.

Thanks to the high TDP limits of the Yoga 7 14, the Radeon 680M is also slightly faster than in the Asus Zenbook S 13 (7% on average in the synthetic tests). However, as with the processor, GPU performance drops slightly under sustained load and the Time Spy stress test fails to pass at 94.2%. There is also a slight performance drop in the Witcher 3 loop.

It is definitely possible to play games with the Yoga 7 14 AMD. Witcher 3, for example, runs very smoothly at high details. Basically, many titles can be played at high details; only with very demanding titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 do you have to use the lowest settings.

GPU performance is not reduced in battery mode. More GPU benchmarks are available here.

The Yoga's fans

During use, you immediately notice that Lenovo has installed only one fan. In conjunction with the relatively high TDP limits, the fan quickly reaches its maximum volume (depending on the power mode), even under medium load. We registered the following values: Maximum 31.2 dB(A) in Battery Saver mode, 37.2 dB(A) in Intelligent Cooling mode and 42.8 dB(A) in Performance mode. On the other hand, the noise is not high-pitched or annoying. In everyday use, the fan is often deactivated or the noise level is rather quiet. No annoying noises such as coil whine were detected.

Temperature

The aluminum case stays pleasantly cool in everyday use. Even under load, users do not have to worry about hot surfaces, for we measured a maximum of around 45 °C on the underside in the stress test. Even so, you can still place the device on your thighs.

In principle, we observed the same behavior in the stress test as with the pure CPU load: after a short spike at 45 watts, it initially runs 34 watts for a few minutes before stabilizing at 24 watts. There were no drops in performance following the stress test

Speakers

The Yoga 7 14 has a total of four speakers (2x 2W woofers & 2x 2W tweeters), but there is a clear difference in quality compared to the more expensive Yoga 9i 14. The speakers become quite loud, but the sound is surprisingly thin and subjectively unimpressive. The sound system also does not perform particularly well in our measurements either.

Energy Management - Good endurance, but no fast charging

Power Consumption

In view of the high-resolution OLED panel, the consumption rates in idle mode in particular are very efficient. Even the Asus Zenbook S 13 with the smaller 13.3-inch OLED needs a bit more power here. This is also true of the Yoga 9i, though it also uses a 4K OLED.

Under load, our review device briefly scratched the power limit of the 65-watt power adapter, but this problem was resolved after a few seconds. The laptop leveled out at 44 watts during the stress test, which is why the power adapter is sufficiently sized.

Battery Life

Charging process
Charging process

Lenovo installs a large 71 Wh battery that enables runtimes of between 7:13 hours (maximum SDR brightness) and 9:44 hours (150 cd/m², corresponding to 67% of the maximum brightness) in our WLAN test. Video playback at 150 cd/m² is even possible for more than 12 hours. These are good results for our comparison group.

An HDR video at full brightness drains the battery in 3:15 hours. Based on our experience with the Alder-Lake mobile processors (and the high power consumption under single-core load), we expect the identical Yoga 7 14 with the Intel Core i7-1260P to achieve slightly shorter runtimes.

According to Lenovo, the laptop supports Rapid Charge, but we are unable to confirm this. We tried both the included 65-watt power adapter and a stronger 100-watt module on both USB-C ports, but the charging curve was always the same. A full charge takes 140 minutes with the device turned on; 50% is available after ~53 minutes.

Verdict - The AMD convertible flexes its muscles

In review: Lenovo Yoga 7 14 AMD. Sample device provided by:
In review: Lenovo Yoga 7 14 AMD. Sample device provided by:

The new Yoga 7 14 is a very interesting convertible, for Lenovo combines a high-quality aluminum chassis with the fast AMD Ryzen 7 6800U, which simply offers much more multi-core performance compared to the current Intel Alder-Lake CPUs and yet requires less power. The Yoga is also available with an Intel processor in the same configuration for the same price, but only offers two advantages in the form of slightly better single-core performance and Thunderbolt 4. Both the AMD and Intel configurations offer USB 4.

Overall, the device performs well in everyday use, but PWM is present in the OLED panel and the speakers are disappointing. In this respect, the more expensive Lenovo Yoga 9i 14 is better, but conversely offers less processor and graphics performance.

The Lenovo Yoga 7 14 is an extremely powerful convertible with the AMD processor. Moreover, the AMD Ryzen 7 6800U is currently proving to be the better choice for compact notebooks or convertibles in terms of efficiency and a significantly faster iGPU.

Compared to the Intel-based (and often more expensive) rivals such as the HP Spectre x360 or the Dell Latitude 9430, the Yoga 7 14 AMD primarily offers performance advantages. Overall, it is a very good package. We only wish that the speakers were better.

Price and Availability

The Lenovo Yoga 7 14 (AMD) appears to be widely available in Europe via Lenovo's official website at varying prices, such as in the UK (£909.49), the Netherlands (1104.16€), France (€1.049.15€), Italy (1097.10€) and Sweden (11033.10 kr). This list is not exhaustive.

Outside Europe, however, the Yoga 7 14 (AMD) does not yet appear to have arrived in all countries where Lenovo is established. A search in the US, Canada, Brazil, India and Singapore returned no results. Australia appears to be the only exception so far, offering the device for AUD$2,149.00.

Prices and availability are as of 03.09.2022 and are subject to change. Users are advised (where applicable) to regularly check via Lenovo's official website for availability.
