Lenovo Yoga 9i 14 2022 Laptop - High-End Convertible with 4K-OLED in Review
The Yoga 9i is Lenovo's flagship convertible for private users and there are models with 14 and 15-inch screens. Our review unit today is the brand-new Yoga 9i 14, which is equipped with a completely redesigned chassis this year and it also uses the most modern tech you can get right now. Our unit with the model designation 82LU006HGE is sold for 1999 Euros, but in return you get a new Alder Lake Core i7 processor from Intel, 16 GB LPDDR5-RAM, a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD as well as a modern Wi-Fi 6E module from Intel. The screen is a 4K OLED panel with the 16:10 aspect ratio and the speaker system is provided by Bowers & Wilkins.

Case - Plenty of metal for the Yoga
Compared to last year’s Yoga 9i 14, Lenovo completely redesigned the chassis and now uses a much more rounded design. In addition to the four rounded corners, the sides of the base unit are rounded as well and they are polished metal, while the rest of the metal chassis uses a dark grey color scheme. The whole device looks very noble and leaves a high quality impression. In addition to our unit in Strom Grey, there is also a lighter silver version.
Lenovo uses 16:10 displays, but the bezels are still pretty wide and the screen-to-body ratio is “just” 78 percent. The lid is also a bit smaller compared to the base unit, so they are not perfectly aligned when you flip the screen over. The Yoga 9i 14 is also a bit heavy when you only want to use it as a tablet at little more than 1.4 kg.
Both the build quality as well as the stability of the convertible are excellent and meet the expectations that come with the high price tag. We especially liked the display hinge, because it keeps the screen extremely well in position and does not wobble even at larger opening angles.
The Yoga 9i 14 is pretty deep for a 14-inch device and together with the Surface Laptop Studio it has the largest footprint in our comparison group. At little more than 1.4 kg, it is one of the lightest devices here. The 100W USB-C power adapter tips the scale at around 400 grams and is a bit heavier than the usual 65W units from Lenovo.
Connectivity - Thunderbolt 4 & USB-A
The new Yoga 9i 14 features a total of three USB-C ports and the two on the left side also support Thunderbolt 4 at 40 Gbps. Lenovo also implemented a regular USB-A port, so you will probably not need any adapters. There is, however, no card reader.
Communication
Lenovo implements the modern Intel AX211 Wi-Fi module, which also supports the latest Wi-Fi 6E standard with 6 GHz networks. We had no problems to connect the Yoga 9i with the 6 GHz network of our new reference router from Asus (GT-AXE11000) and the transfer rates were very high as well as stable. We did not notice any connectivity issues with other routers (Netgear Nighthawk AX12 Wi-Fi 6 & AVM FritzBox 7490 Wi-Fi 5) during our review period, either.
Webcam
The top bezel contains both the IR camera for facial recognition via Windows Hello as well as the 1080p camera, which can be covered by a mechanical shutter. The picture quality is better than on regular 720p modules, but you should not expect any miracles. The additional features are more interesting. In addition to a soft focus, which will blur the background by the press of a button, there are also a couple of camera-based security features. Lenovo calls them Zero Touch and the device can, for example, lock automatically when you move away from the laptop. This can be very useful when you are on the go.
Maintenance
In addition to the cleaning of the fans, it is also possible to replace the M.2-2280 SSD. However, Lenovo makes it really hard to remove the bottom panel. It is now only secured by six visible Torx screws (T5), but there are also three small Philips screws hidden underneath the rear rubber foot, which is partially glued. After the removal of all the screws, the panel is still firmly attached and we recommend a suction cup to lift it.
Input Devices - Yoga with good keyboard
Keyboard
The dark gray keyboard features a two-stage white illumination, which can also be activated automatically thanks to an ambient light sensor. This is a good keyboard, and even though the key travel is rather shallow (we suspect 1-1.2 mm), the key strokes are very precise and firm. The typing noise for the regular keys is also very quiet, which adds to the good quality impression. There are still two issues, because the keys in the bottom row (especially the space bar) tend to clatter a bit and the additional column on the right side needs an adjusting period. Initially, we often hit the fingerprint scanner instead of the right arrow key, for example. The other additional keys are not all that helpful, either, with functions like switching from dark to bright Windows color mode or the performance mode, which can also be toggled via the familiar key combination Fn+Q.
Touchpad & Stylus
The large clickpad offers good gliding capabilities and works extremely well. The only problem is the loud clicking sound when you really press it down, which does not really suit the high price tag. We recommend you only tap on the pad to trigger clicks.
The box of the Yoga 9i 14 also includes Lenovo's Precision Pen 2, which can be charged via USB-C. It cannot be stored inside the chassis anymore, but it is also a larger pen in return and is very similar to a regular pen. If you take plenty of notes or write a lot, the larger pen will certainly be a better option, even though the comfort during transport suffers a bit.
Lenovo's Precision Pen 2 supports 4096 pressure levels and works really well with the Yoga 9i 14. There were no accidental inputs by our palms when we were writing, but the resistance from the touchscreen surface took a bit of time getting used to.
Display - Lenovo uses a 16:10 4K OLED
Lenovo offers three different 16:10 panels for the Yoga 9i 14 (1x IPS, 2x OLED) and our review unit is equipped with the high-end 4K OLED option. The brightness of the three panels is rated at 400 nits, so the differences are limited to the resolution and the color gamut.
The subjective picture quality of the high-resolution OLED is extremely good and in addition to rich and vivid colors, you can enjoy very sharp images thanks to the high resolution of 3840 x 2400 pixels (323 ppi). OLED screens do not suffer from backlight bleeding and the response times are extremely fast.
When we check the brightness, we have to differentiate between SDR and HDR contents. Standard SDR contents will top out at around 360 nits, which does not sound like a lot, but the extremely high contrast ratio definitely makes up for that. HDR contents are supported, but the corresponding Windows setting is deactivated by default. We managed to measure a maximum HDR brightness of 580 nits on a small white partial image, while we still measured 460 nits on an almost completely white image. The HDR implementation is anything but perfect here, because in addition to the manual activation of HDR contents, it is not possible to use this mode on battery power. There is only a note that HDR is deactivated to ensure longer battery life. We think the manufacturer should let the customer decide whether he/she wants to enjoy HDR videos on battery power or not.

* ... smaller is better
We analyzed the display with the professional CalMAN software (X-Rite i1 Pro 2) and also calibrated it. However, our own calibration was not successful even after multiple attempts, so we cannot offer a corresponding icc profile. The picture quality is fortunately already quite good out of the box. There is no strong color cast, but some of the colors miss the target deviation of 3 compared to the DCI-P3 reference color space. It is definitely possible to edit pictures/videos to a certain extent, but the performance could be better.
The OLED screen covers both the DCI-P3 as well as the AdobeRGB gamuts almost completely. We would like to see a software solution to switch between the different color spaces in the future, which is already the case for some mobile workstations.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 239.2 Hz | ≤ 50 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 239.2 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 50 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 239.2 Hz is relatively low, so sensitive users will likely notice flickering and experience eyestrain at the stated brightness setting and below. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17900 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
PWM is a tricky topic on OLED screens and you have to differentiate. We can detect DC dimming when the brightness is between 51-89 percent at a frequency of 60 Hz, but the amplitude is very small, so there should not be any issues and we did not see any flickering with the naked eye. We can detect the typical PWM flickering at 240 Hz when the brightness drops to 50 percent or lower.
The glossy touchscreen surface will obviously result in reflections outdoors, but you can still see the display contents even on bright days thanks to the excellent contrast ratio as long as you can avoid reflections from direct light sources or bright surfaces. The viewing angle stability of the OLED is generally excellent, but you can see the typical light blue shimmer from certain angles.
Performance - Intel Alder Lake and PCIe 4.0
Review Settings
Lenovo's own Vantage app offers three different performance profiles in addition to the regular Windows settings. The default setting is “intelligent cooling”, but you can also select a high-performance as well as a battery saver mode. The high-performance mode, however, only increases the fan speed under load, but does not improve the performance, so we used the default setting “intelligent cooling” for the following benchmarks and measurements.
Processor - Core i7-1260P
The Intel Core i7-1260P is a new Alder Lake processor (12th generation). Intel introduced a new sub-series with the P-class, which has a nominal TDP of 28W and is placed right between the familiar U-series (15W) and H-series (45W). We have already published a review of the new Alder Lake-P CPU with more details.
The Core i7-1260P uses a combination of 4 performance cores (with Hyperthreading support) and 8 efficiency cores, so it can execute up to 16 threads simultaneously. Lenovo set very generous TDP values of 64W for peak load (which is also the maximum value for the P-series) and 38W under sustained workloads. These values are pretty high for a compact 14-inch device.
Cinebench R15 Multi Loop
Our Cinebench R15 Multi loop shows that the performance drops slightly after the first run, but is stable afterwards. Compared to the old Tiger Lake quad-core processors (like the Core i7-1165G7 or Core i7-11370H) the multi-core performance is much better and comparable to AMD’s Zen 3 CPUs. The single-core performance is excellent, but the new performance cores also consume a lot of power. We observed up to 26W for the core (for comparison: AMD ~14W @Zen 3), so the new performance cores are not very efficient.
The power consumption is limited to 52W on battery power. This does not affect the single-core performance, but the multi-core results are a bit lower (~10 percent). More CPU benchmarks are available here.

Storage Devices
Lenovo uses a very fast PCIe 4.0 SSD, which can also be replaced. The M.2-2280 drive in our review unit is provided by Samsung and it offers a storage capacity of 1 TB (902 GB are available after the initial set-up). The PM9A1 is the OEM version of the 980 Pro and it is one of the fastest drives on the market with transfer rates of more than 6 GB/s. Except for the storage capacity, there is no reason to replace the drive. More SSD benchmarks are listed here.

GPU Performance - Iris Xe Graphics G7
We can keep the GPU section short since the new Alder Lake CPUs still use the familiar Iris Xe Graphics G7 with either 80 or 96 execution units. Our Core i7-1260P is equipped with the faster version with 96 EUs and a maximum core clock of 1.4 GHz. The general performance did not change and the iGPU is still a very good solution for everyday tasks including the playback of high-resolution videos.
The performance is stable under sustained workloads, but the gaming performance is not particularly good in general. Most titles can only be played with low/medium settings and you should focus on older or less demanding titles.
The GPU performance is not reduced on battery power. More GPU benchmarks are available in our tech section.

Emissions - Yoga 9i with frequent fan activity
System Noise
The Yoga 9i 14 uses two differently sized fans and it is a very quiet laptop most of the time. However, we noticed that the fans tend to start spinning very quickly even during light workloads like when we started the browser or used multiple tabs. We suspect the chip quickly reaches high temperatures due to the high power consumption, so it has to be cooled. The fans also hit their maximum speed (~40 dB(A)) under load when you play games or export videos, for example. The high-performance mode results in about 45 dB(A), while the battery saver mode is much quitter at 33 dB(A). The results are quite interesting, because the performance is still very stable despite the lower fan speed and the temperatures are not going through the roof, so it looks like there is a bit of optimization potential here. Our review unit did not have any problems with other electronic noises.

Temperature
The chassis is very cool during light workloads, but some areas will warm up noticeably when you play games or when you stress the CPU. The center and upper keyboard area reaches more than 45 °C and the bottom even more than 50 °C. You should not put the device on your lap in these cases.
The performance is once again very stable during the stress test and the CPU quickly levels off at a consumption of 38W (13W are used for the iGPU).
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 47.5 °C / 118 F, compared to the average of 35.3 °C / 96 F, ranging from 19.6 to 55.7 °C for the class Convertible.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 52.2 °C / 126 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.7 °C / 78 F, compared to the device average of 30.2 °C / 86 F.
(±) Playing The Witcher 3, the average temperature for the upper side is 37.2 °C / 99 F, compared to the device average of 30.2 °C / 86 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 28.6 °C / 83.5 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.1 °C / 82.6 F (-0.5 °C / -0.9 F).

Speakers
The sound system consists of four speakers (2 woofers at the front edges of the base unit & 2 tweeters in the soundbar underneath the display) and creates an excellent and very spatial sound experience. This is definitely one of the best systems you can currently get on a laptop and it can also keep up with the new MacBook Pro models. It does not matter if you watch videos or listen to music, the performance is great. The preloaded Dolby Audio software offers different profiles as well as an equalizer. Thanks to the position of the speaker, you can enjoy good sound in every mode of the convertible.

Power Consumption
We were pretty surprised by our idle measurements, because the 4K OLED seems to vey efficient. We only measured little more than 10W even at the maximum SDR brightness. The maximum consumption under load was 97W for a couple of seconds before it dropped to around 62W due to the lower CPU consumption. The included 100W power adapter is therefore completely sufficient.

Battery Runtime
Laptops with high-resolution OLED screens are usually not great when it comes to the battery runtimes, but our consumption measurements were okay and Lenovo uses a large 75 Wh battery. Our Wi-Fi test at 150 nits (corresponds with 70% of the maximum brightness) runs for around 8.5 hours and still 6.5 hours at the maximum brightness. These results are decent and also better compared to the Yoga 9i 14 with the 2.8K OLED screen. Video playback at 150 nits is possible for more than 12.5 hours. We would have liked to give you the runtime for HDR movies, but we already mentioned that HDR playback is blocked on battery.
Lenovo's vantage app has an option for fast charging and we tried it, but we did not see a difference and the two charging curves are pretty much identical. A full charge took around two hours in both cases.

Verdict - Lenovo offers a great high-end convertible
Lenovo's completely redesigned Yoga 9i 14 is definitely a high-end convertible that left a very good impression during our review. You get a high-end chassis, a very good 4K OLED screen as well as an excellent speaker system.
Intel’s new 12th generation Alder Lake-P CPUs offer much better multi-core performance compared to the previous Tiger Lake models, but Intel still needs to work on the efficiency. Still, users get plenty of performance, but Lenovo should try to optimize the fan curve. The 4K OLED screen leaves a much better impression than the 2.8K version we also tested. The power consumption is also lower, which obviously results in longer battery runtimes.
The new Lenovo Yoga 9i 14 is a great high-end convertible with modern features. There are a couple of problems, but they are very small and do not affect the good overall impression.
We also noticed a couple of issues, but they will probably not have an impact on your experience. The case is tricky to open and there is no more room to store the stylus. However, you now get a bigger stylus in return, which is much more comfortable to use. We do not understand why HDR playback is not available on battery power.
One of the biggest rivals is certainly the more expensive Surface Laptop Studio. It can be equipped with a dedicated GeForce RTX 3050 Ti GPU, but it falls short in other areas (quad-core CPU, no PCIe 4.0, no Wi-Fi 6E, only sRGB color gamut). If you use a lot of HDR contents or just want an excellent screen, it is hard to ignore the new MacBook Pro 14 with its Mini-LED panel. The base model is already available for around 2000 Euros and even the entry-level M1 Pro CPU with 8 cores is already competitive and at the same time much more efficient.
Price and Availability
The Yoga 9i 14 currently starts at $1079 with the Core i7-1260P, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD and the 1080p IPS screen in Lenovo's online shop.
