iPhone 14 Pro Max helps Apple rake in billions in first-half 2023 smartphone sales as Samsung stutters and Xiaomi vanishes
A report published by Omdia has given a snapshot of the current state of the smartphone shipment world. The analysis experts have published a chart showing the differences between 1H23 and 1H22 (see image below), and it is clear to see that global shipments of smartphones are decreasing. This is attributed to such reasons as the current global economic climate, growth in second-hand phone sales, and the dropping interest in purchasing cheap and mid-range phones from Chinese companies such as Xiaomi and OnePlus.
So, according to the table, the first-half-of-the-year shipment champion is the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max with 26.5 million units sent out worldwide. This is a massive uptick over 1H22 shipments of the predecessor iPhone 13 Pro Max, which is listed with 23 million units shifted. The iPhone 14 Pro is the only other device with over 20 million units shipped so far in 2023, standing at a figure of 21 million. In all, the five Apple iPhones selected for the chart have amassed an amount of 86.4 million units shipped, with the still popular iPhone 11 popping in at 10th position.
In contrast, Samsung’s five entries accumulated just 46.9 million units shipped, and it is worth keeping in mind that Apple will also be making a much higher revenue here, as its iPhone 14 series is considered a premium range, whereas examples like the Samsung Galaxy A14 are distinctly affordable. Samsung sells the 5G variant of that phone for US$199.99, so 9.0 million shipped units of that SKU amounts to almost US$1.8 billion in value. Using an average of US$1,324 for the four variants of the iPhone 14 Pro Max leaves Apple with an astonishing amount of over US$35 billion of goods shipped for just this model.
