Airpods with USB-C charging case to be announced at Apple's event on September 12
Apple announced that it will hold its next product announcement event on September 12, and the rumor mill is in full motion. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, there will be quite a few shifts in one of Apple's most popular products.
According to Gurman, Apple will unveil the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro lines with the latest A-series SoC from the Cupertino colossus. This is expected, as is the rumored shift of the iPhone to the USB-C standard.
However, the company is also rumored to announce a new set of Airpods that will also boast a USB-C charging port, which would put another nail in Lightning's coffin. If the iPhone and Airpods do indeed make the transition to USB-C, then the only items Apple sells that would still use the company's proprietary Lightning standard (outside of older iPhones and the 9th generation iPad) would be peripherals like the Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard.
These rumors match statements analyst Ming-Chi Kuo made back in March, although Kuo's claims concerned the next AirPods Pro charging case instead of the standard AirPods.
Gurman has also claimed, per MacRumors, that the next version of the AirPods will have biometric features, including the ability to read body temperature via the wearer's ear canals and automatic configurations based on the wearer's hearing ability.
Keep in mind these are currently rumors. Gurman has a fairly decent track record, but we will have to wait and see how accurate his predictions are on September 12.
